Emsam Failures?

Posted by SLS on October 12, 2006, at 0:37:10

Not a single person reported responding well to Emsam when I asked the question earlier in the week.

Is there anyone who wishes to report a failure to respond to Emsam?

As I recall, people have reported experiencing an energizing and anxiolytic effect during the first two weeks, but not a sustained antidepressant effect. It seems that Emsam is a disappointment.

Just wanted to mention again, that on oral selegiline I did pretty well. Lower side-effects than most other ADs, never had a problem with heart-rate, BP, or interactions. Definitely improved my mood, and I'd recommend it to others as a good thing to try.

I don't take it now, due to misc side-effects--which most patients do not get--but selegiline/EMSAM is still my second favorite AD. Much better than moclobemide.

My initial response to Emsam was promising as it was energizing. The problem quickly became insomnia which I couldn't get a handle on and then the edema crept up on me. Before I knew it I was like a sausage. My feet would hardly fit in my shoes and my wedding ring was stuck. At that point the insomnia became a non issue and the Ensam experiment was over. I couldn't get out of the gate with it so I have no idea whether it would have held up long term or not.

I was tentatively supposed to try that next, but my Pdoc -who is a resident- consulted w/his advisor, and rather than try that
[due to my response to Parnate (@ 60 mg for a coupe of months) - it helped some, but seemed to fade lately],
they want to try a TCA next...

...wish I could offer some feedback - but I can't, as of yet.

Anyone else....?

Re: Emsam worked for me

I haven't been around this last week or two.

I stopped emsam almost a month ago because of a problem that I expect is temporary. Not sure if it's the emsam or emsam and another med or what, but the emsam isn't good to have at the moment because of the SE.

It worked extremely well for me, and kept improving in effects, up to the stopping point. I took it for four months.

This SE is taking a long time to resolve.

What was the window for restarting a med without risking loss of AD effectiveness, in your view? I know you've mentioned a month-- assuming the renewal of medication might not be as effective-- but was there evidence for that, or only an intuition?

Actually, with MAOIs, taking a holiday of 3 months can actually renew their effectiveness.

I don't think I would want to comment right now regarding the development of resistence to previously effective medications anything more than to say that I doubt a one month discontinuation would be long enough to have that happen.
