Is clonazepam/Klonopin a real anxiolytic?

Posted by Franz on October 9, 2006, at 20:18:26

I feel different when I take clonazepam from when I use alprazolam. Like alprazolam relaxes me more and affects mood in other way also.
Clonazepam is good but I am not sure if it makes my mood worse.
I take low doses of both when I do.
I know clonazepam was first used as an anticonvulsant, so maybe although they are both benzo they are not equivalent.

I feel clonazepam has a depressing aspect to it. It's longer acting than ativan. Been years since ativan but I liked it when I took it. Love Phillipa

Yes, it is an anxiolytic -- all benzodiazepines are though they vary in their anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, anaesthetic, and sedative-hypnotic qualities.

Klonopin, Valium, and Librium are long half life primarily anxiolytic and anticonvulsant benzodiazepines.

Ativan and Xanax are short half life mostly anxiolytic and somewhat sedative benzodiazepines.

Restoril, Dalmane, Halcion, and (where available) Rohypnol are sedative-hypnotic mostly.

agree with above post. Xanax has more of a slight antidepressant property to it. Clonazepam from all the many things I have read, posts here and on other forums, is more depressing-- in fact it seems to be the most depressing of the benzos for *most* people.

I think its b/c klonopin is such a strong anti-convulsant (I mean, for a benzo). Tranxene is also a strong anti-convulsant benzo, and its known for causing some **serious** depression. Interestingly enough..they use it as a withdrawal med for alcholics. I guess its punishment for being a drunk.

Xanax has an odd structure, so for a while docs used it in mild cases of mixed anxiety/depression (some older docs still do). The bad thing about it is the half-life; one would think xanax xr would make it better, but it still seems like shrinks go for klonopin over xanax.

Good question; it was first manufactured
as an anti-convulsant, but all benzos are
anti-convulsants. It is not a fast anxiolytic
but insofar as anxiety is a gabba-thing, i guess
it is an anxiolytic. Alcohol is an anxiolytic
for that matter.

Cheaper too, less side effects, makes you feel good, no prescription, no pdoc appointment. So how much do you think you'd save a year? love Phillipa

Its tempting but the side effects come in the morning after, depression, hangover...
Plus cirrhosis with long term use. And possible TD with extreme alcohol use.

A benzodiazepine is much better than a bottle of wine. Not being a teatotaler, but a tab of Valium or Xanax is less harsh on the system. And if you want to mostly avoid your liver, there's always Serax.

Jay I haven't had a drink in ten years. But how come when I drank I worked and felt great? Never more than 6 beers. No hangover either. Jogged each morning. Then went to work. Love Phillipa

Oh I don't care if you drink , that's your perogative in the US after we finally ditched prohibition except for control states which meddle with alcohol sales and sell them in their own state stores... but I digress

6 beers a night is a bit on the excessive side, but we all process things differently. Some of us may not have any hangovers. You felt better because the alcohol acted primarily on your GABA transmitters and somewhat rewarding on your dopaminergic system.

Jogging each morning certainly burns off some of the beer calories. :)

But 42 drinks a week is a little on the extreme if I'm gathering. Yes, college students binge, I did too on cider and wine a few times, only once in my life did I ever um.. hurl. But its much harsher on the liver than a doctor prescribing a few Xanax, Ativan, Valium, etc, and they're much cleaner as a drug/medication, as alcohol is of course.

Jay then why don't the meds make me feel good? Is there a different part of Gaba. And what med would hit this same spot as alchohol? Love Phillipa

Autopsyies taken on individuals using benzos for 30 years reveal no deterioration of the brain or liver. An alchoholics brain is discolered and affected. The liver goes in most heavy drinkers far before brain (wet brain) damage sets in.
