High dose Namenda

Posted by BIGDaddyachmed69 on September 9, 2006, at 10:58:31

I'm all about pushing the envelope...I can't help it, being treatment-resistant. My psychiatrist agreed to increase the dose of Namenda I was taking off-label for my OCD to 60 mg/day...now I know you're supposed to take it twice a day. The thing is, I've been taking it once a day...I'm supposed to take it when I get up in the morning and then again before I go to sleep. The way I see it, why do I need to dose before I go to sleep? I'm not going to benefit from it, as I'm going to be sleeping. I doubt that Namenda takes 4 to 6 weeks to fully kick in, like the SSRIs. It's an NMDA antagonist...like dissociatives (the recreational drugs PCP and Ketamine). They don't take 4 to 6 weeks to work. The effects are noticeable within an hour or two. I dunno...I'd hate to have to divide the dose in half, because 30 mg twice a day isn't strong enough in combatting the symptoms of my OCD. I need the full 60 mg. Anyway, if anybody's been on a relatively high dose of Namenda (memantine) or has an opinion on whether or not it makes more sense to take it just once a day, feel free to express yourself.

I tend to see this recomended in theory and on paper more than actual people, how about yourself?

Way to expensive for me to have ever tried.

40mg of Namenda made me feel sort of drunk and high. I didn't like it, so I went back down to 20mg. I felt somewhat better for awhile at 20mg during the second and third weeks, but I ultimately gained no improvement in depression beyond this.

OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to assess possible antidepressant effects of memantine, a selective N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist in humans. METHOD: In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 32 subjects with major depression were randomly assigned to receive memantine (5-20 mg/day) (N=16) or placebo (N=16) for 8 weeks. Primary efficacy was assessed by performance on the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS). RESULTS: The linear mixed models for total MADRS scores showed no treatment effect. CONCLUSIONS: In an 8-week trial, the low-to-moderate-affinity NMDA antagonist memantine in doses of 5-20 mg/day was not effective in the treatment of major depressive disorder.

Does memantine help with your ocd?
I'm about to try it for my ocd, I have pure-o type ocd.
