Hi. I was wondering if anyone has any information about Neurontin. I had read on a couple of sites that people had found it effective for OCD and depression and EXTREMELY effective for anxiety. Does anyone know anything about it? Is it really effective? What side effects might there be? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Paul

Gabapentin seems to be effective for various forms of anxiety (GAD and possibly social phobia but probably not OCD). It is not a consistently useful treatment for bipolar disorder.

Any side effects? I'm specifically concerned with drowsiness. My "baseline" is extremely fragile or shifty. Not sure how to stabilize.

a friend of mine is on it for pain and takes a small dose a couple times a day. at first it made her drowsy but she's been on it for a few years and no drowsiness what-so-ever.

I have found the newer (more expensive) version of Neurontin, Lyrica, to provide slightly better benefits for anxiety with less sedation.
warm regards, Jake

I haven't tried the newer Lyrica, but I take neurontin every third day (on this rotation augment schedule I'm having success with) and get good remission from anxiety and defeating self ruminations with it. It just doesn't pack as much punch when I take it every day. taken occationally it can even equal the effect of taking a benzo for anxiety and depression. Ron

I was once put on neurontin for "restless legs", but it didn't do anything. And then later a sleep study showed there was no "restless legs", and many say that "restless legs" (as a "disease") was invented in effort to find a use for neurontin.
I have a new doctor now- a very, very smart one. He says he is very unimpressed by neurontin for any use--that he always knew of a better solution for the situation. That "neurontin is a drug in search of a use". ??? Maybe it's a matter of opinion or personal body chemistry. I do trust this guy's opinions very much though- he even teaches other psychiatrists about drugs.
