Re: med for depression and obsessive thoughts??

Posted by Karen44 on July 8, 2006, at 23:46:10

I would like to know what medications anyone would recommend for depression and obsessive thoughts. I have gone off of Parnate (with pdoc approval) and have been off of it for one week now. I am becoming more and more depressed and also having problems with obessive thoughts re stuff the bothers me. Don't want to say what it is. I have tried Zoloft, Remeron, Cymbalta, Effexor and Nortiptilene before the Parnate. All except the Parnate caused me to suffer adverse or allergic reactions such as rash. I am not sure now what might work. Don't see my pdoc for two weeks per my request. We were meeting weekly, but it meant a whole half day off of work for a 45 minute appointment (due to travel time).

I have the same issues,im glad someone figured out how to label it as i knew its not full blow ocd,i.e i dont wash my hands or count things etc.

But a weird sysmptom remains,my mind is only controlled when meds are working,if not i can obsess over everything.

Parnate works on it for about an hour in maybe, other times it works on it when ive gone without parnate and finally get to use it,example when im out or the pharmacy is.

Also if im succesful at a parnate Augment,it works but usualy this requires constant juggling.

Point is parnate alone doesent help, and afet time if i use it alone can even worsen it,very odd.

Im curious in ur post as to why u stopped the parnate,in case i missed it.

Right now im augmenting parnate to death pulling straws until i figure out,or hope for a doc too,of a option, same as you are.

Currently things i use randomly to augment parnate are......

X yrem in small amounts
Klonopin
Nuerontion
Xanac
Lopressor a beta blocker

I juggle these aroun with parnate trying to keep some form of stablilit,i know exactly what u are going through and when the meds are working its like a hand clamps on my brain and stops it from jumping around thinking and putting me through hell.

To achieve this effect is just getting harder and harder,i wish there was a med for obsessive hyperactive thinking, which also touches depressive and anxiety driven symptoms as well.

I am also on Neurontin, but for chronic pain. I have talked to my doctor about a medication to make some of this stuff go away, and we tried small doses of antipsychotic medications such as Serequel and Ambilfy. I think these are the ones. I could not function on less than the minimal dose; just zonked me out. Then I tried Risperidone, and it seemed to be working until I had an adverse reaction to it with slurred speech, confusion, stiff and sore muscles, stopping sentences in the middle and not ever realizing it. Fortunately I was on vacaton when this happened. The next thing was to try adding Lamictal, but I just wanted off the Parnate as it did not seem to be working anymore. Guess it was working some because I am becoming really depressed. Off the Parnate, I think there might be more options, but I am not sure. I will let you know when I see my pdoc on the 21st.

Karen I just started lamictal myself and so far so good. I also take now down to l00mg of luvox. And valium 20mg that I'm lowering too. As I'm sleeping like today to ll or l2 noon. Totally unacceptable to me. Love Phillipa ps Give the lamictal a go. It comes in a starter pack. Starts low and works up to highter doses. They say that 200mg is max for depression. And there are many antidepressants you can add to this. Love Phillipa
