Okay Answer Me This One

Posted by Phillipa on April 3, 2006, at 22:35:27

I won't go into details everything is okey. But I was in the ER all day Saturday with chestpain on resting and sleeping. After an angiogram and full cardiac workup the ER doc gave me percocet to take at bed for the chestpain and I do have a herniated disc in my cervical spine found out today from an MRI. Now then how come I feel great on the one percocet with my 20mg standard valium at night and feel horrible if I take an SSRI or SSNRI? Wierd huh? Love Phillipa

I don't know. But I find lortab to be great for my depression and energy. Even told my Doc and he agreed but in the long run it would be worse.
I now have a label with two docs about the lortab.
asking for it when my pain didn't warrant the level of the drug I wanted. I fessed up and told them it helped my depression. Gese you would think I killed somebody the way I get treated by my GYN and Internist.
Needless too say I'm embarressed and will be changing docs and keeping my mouth shut.

because you're probably bipolar in a very mild degree and ssri's can make bipolars jump off walls with anxiety. i wouldn't take another ssri jan - they will all do that crap to you.

i honestly don't see why you can't simply take valium with an antidepressant.....or throw a mood stabilizer in there! im sure you're doctor has mentioned mood stabiliziers to you!

Simple. You are an opioid responder. Who knows why?

If you are not disposed to trying buprenorphine as a treatment for your condition (I don't really know what that is), you might want to look for drugs that are pro-dopaminergic. Actually, you might find some relief from using low dosages of Zyprexa.

Have you ever tried using stimulants?

Gotta think more about this...

Update!!!!Called the neurologist about the MRI's no way is the chest pain from the disc. He wants me to see a neurosurgeon think he's trying to blow me off as he knows I have anxiety. I said the ER doc gave me the percocet they said no we dont use that. I asked the assistant if she would see the neurologist first before a neurosurgeon we decided that would be the plan. Then the phone rings and its my appoinment with the neurosurgeon. I explained tha plan of seeing the neurologist first she adamantaly said he wanted me to see the nurosurgeon . So now I have three appointments . One with the internist, one the neurologis, one with a neurosurgeon. This is making me very tired and confused. So what do I do? What would you do? The minute a doc hears you have anxiety immediatedly that's the problem. Help!!!!Love Phillipa

Zyprexa produces an increase of the release of dopamine in regions of the brain that are important to mood and cognition.

So an atypical antipsychotic makes you feel better for a better word? What about seroquel or resperidol and abilfy and wellbutrin? I just don't have the knowelge you have and don't understand all the technical words when I google them. Love Phillipa

Hi PJ

Percocet made you feel better because it contains an opioid med called oxycodone. Opioids are well known for making people feel nice.

I tried taking Vicoden once to see how I would respond to it. Nada. Some depressions remain resistent to opioid challenges.

Have you ever tried Percodan or Percocet? I haven't had such great response to Percocet -- probably because Tylenol doesn't do much for me -- but Percodan is great stuff. I cant' take codeine, nor many of the synthetic codeines like Vicodin, so my experience is very limited, and I've never paid attention to whether or not my mood improved when I've taken the Percodan, but I do know it's been a pleasant feeling -- and not only because it removes the pain...

Would Vicodin have the same sort of effect as Percodan? I would think the difference would be orders of magnitude, but what do I know? (That's a serious question, Scott. If you know the answer, I'm interested to hear it.)

Ed I know percocet is an opiod. But it doesn't make me high. I just laughed last night at a TV show and I've never laughted since I've been on an SSRI or SSNRI or a TCA. And it is only one pill at night. And my husband says if you feel like yourself of it why can't you take it you don't abuse drugs. I mean why not take something if it does what the AD's are supposed to do in a low does. People in chronic pain use it 25/7 every day and don't get addicted. And isn't that better than surgery for something that only bothers you when you sleep? But the neurologist says he couldn't be from the disc. I think he sending me to a surgeon cause he doesn't want to treat me cause he knows I have anxiety that automatically makes me a nut case. Love Phillipa ps boy it gets me angry

I think oxycodone and hydrocodone are about equal in potency as analgesics. I don't know whether they are equal as euphoriants, though. Of the two, oxycodone is the drug I have seen most often chosen as an antidepressant.

Scott you're seen them used as antidepressants? How the heck do you get to take it if it works and obviously it works for me. I know you have suffered for more years than me. But l0 years when you've just turned 60 is a long time. All I want is l0 years more to feel good. Any suggestions do I have to buy they illegally I will if I have to after all these years I've found something that works and that means more to me than going into a ghetto area or whatever to feel like a normal person and maybe just maybe go back to being the good nurse I was . I'm on limited time here I'm not 30 like a lot of the others. Not taking that away from others but I think you get my Point. Love phillipa

The only thing I could suggest is that you bring in to your doctor medical literature that demonstrates the effectiveness of buprenorphine as an antidepressant.

http://ajp.psychiatryonline.org/cgi/content/full/156/12/2017

Stoll and Bodkin have done some work with buprenorphine.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=buprenorphine+AND+%28stoll+OR+bodkin%29&btnG=Search

I might have to convince my doctor to try buprenorphine. He is open-minded, yet in some ways conservative. I don't know how he would feel about using an opioid. We've never discussed it.

I wouldn't say opioids make me high either. I find them pleasant but not 'high'.

Yes, oxycodone has always been an effective antidepressant for me. Unfortunately, quite sedating as well.

I have never, ever seen it used for depression. Bupenorphine, yes. I'd look into that.
