Abilify

Posted by corafree on March 20, 2006, at 7:56:51

(Okay .. I forgot where to post medication issues. I thought there was a med board. Pls redirect me if I'm in the wrong.)

I've just seen a new P and will p/u Abilify tomorrow.

I've never tried it before, or really any of its type.

I brought it up and the P said he was thinking of it, and Lamictal, also. I shared I'd tried Lamictal but would not tolerate side effects.

So, if anyone can share their experiences w/ Abilify, and that could 'choose their words carefully re: their reaction', I'd be interested in hearing those 'carefully chosen words'.

Forgive me, but I'm so pitifully responsive to suggestion!

Oh, current labels are as follows: A lot of GAD, splash of bipolar IV, w/ a dash of ADD and OCD for color.

(What kind of humor is that I'm displaying?)

bestwishes, cf

Hi CF.

I am currently taking Abilify 10mg to treat bipolar depression. It helps just a smidgeon, but I'll take anything I can get. It has helped with mental energy and motivation.

What would you be taking this drug for?

When Abilify therapy is first started, it can produce a cluster of side effects that resemble akathisia. However, this usually disappears by the end of week two. These side effects may include anxiety, restlessness, and insomnia. Again, these are usually start-up side effects that end up disappearing. What you end up with can be a very clean drug with anxiolytic as well as antidepressant properties. Of course, it is also used to treat schizoid disorders and bipolar mania.

Abilify

hi! yeah, the first 2 weeks or so on abilify sometimes suck...you might be able to avoid problems if you do a very slow titration. I imagine for someone in your situation the shrink would want to hit a dosage below 10mgs, which is the point at which abilify becomes an effective antipsychotic. Maybe you could start at 10mgs, then gradually work up to whatever helps? That might be best. Your doc might also want to consider as-needed propranolol and benzo medication during the first 2 weeks to deal with any hardcore side effects.
