1mg Klonopin withdrawal

Posted by James Dunworth on February 7, 2006, at 18:05:06

I know someone who was vastly overmedicated, including 9mg/day Klonopin. Almost died. Now this person is on 1mg plus a bit of Zoloft. Is this dose significatly addictive?

one mg isnt significantly addictive compared to 9 mgs of klonopin. People always say that klonopin has a low to no tolerance level to its anxiolytic effects, if this is the case, how do some people get to such high mgs? ---the effective dose for anxiety is anywhere from .5 to 3 mgs.

Good question. But 20mg is taken for seizure disorder. Fondly, Phillipa

If the person wants off klonopin they just need to do a slow taper. They don't get "addicted".

Exactly. If you're experiencing "withdrawal", you're coming off it way too fast. 10-15% a week should really be the maximum of coming off a dose, depending on how long one has been on it, and how much of a dose, etc. They're habituating in some people -- they're not addictive. But this semantic difference has been debated time immmemorial on this board.

And you're right, Phillipa, 20mg is the general limit for epilepsy. Most doctors usually stop at 4mg for panic disorder. However.... I have taken considerably more for complex anxiety. It may just be I'm a big person, or I metabolize certain medications faster. 1mg for someone may be indetectable for someone else.

I've come off 1 mg just fine...

I've never taken more than 1 mg a day and anytime I've wanted to come off of it, I just went down to .5 mg's for a few weeks, then to .25 mg's for a few weeks, then to nothing.

I've never had any problem stopping the Klonopin.

I have used Klon to taper off Xanax and Ativan...long half life. 1 MG is not much but the hardest to get off. Easy for me to get from 3 to 1. When I want to taper down K I mix with Valium and taper slowly. No suffering. Valium has 20 hr half life (apx) and much easier to taper. It is the return of the initial underlying anxiety this reapears that makes it difficult. It returns in full force so it can be very unpleasant. Each person is different and most doctors prescibe a taper that is too rapid. It is living hell (ears ring, headaches, nerves frayed and insomnia) if you go to fast.
