why do I have horrific anxiety right before..

Posted by spriggy on January 1, 2006, at 21:51:40

My cycle.

I know we all complain about PMS but I'm talking about that horrific anxiety that makes your skin crawl- like you drank 14 cups of coffee and downed some Pure Ephedra with it.

It's usually not this bad except this one time of the month.

What exactly is the reason? I know it's hormonal but what stinkin' hormone can I curse to Hades for this?

Oh and one more question..

Is there any link between constipation and depression?

Sorry, this may be too much info but I got seriously plugged up for about a week and in that time, I would wake up in the middle of the night with just horrible- I do not want to go on-type depression.

I finally had some colonary action and I felt better..

Is there a connection?

Seriously, like toxin build up or something? Other than me being full of crap- I've already heard that one. LOL

Could be the opposite. It could be that in a cycle of very severe depression, your whole body slows down and your digestive system quits working as well. I know serotonin is present in large amounts in the gut normally. If yours is low, maybe your colon doesn't work right?

I'm a bit of an expert about hormonacoasters right now, so I can tell you that your cycle starts out with Estrogen, which generally if a feel-good kind of hormone; then you get your luteal surge just barely before you ovulate; after which progesterone takes over. Progesterone, as far as I can make out, is Not Your Friend. I know it ain't mine. I get snappy, then vicious, then depressed. All at once, but it kinda comes in that order, right around the time that maybe I might be ovulating -- hard to tell when I do that, even a bit hard to tell if I am doing that at all. Makes baby-making rough.

If it's really bad, to the point that you can't stay stabilized, two things are said to be pretty effective: birth control pills, which regulate your cycle for you and ease the mood swings a good bit; or a low dose of Paxil for about three days a month: starting a few days before your period, and lasting only until your period starts. It's not clear why that helps, since it's not enough time for it to work as an SSRI. There's something else going on, but it's had a lot of good results in studies. Talk to a good doctor about it -- probably either a pdoc or a gyn.

Good luck.

That's really interesting.

I thought it was the opposite
Estrogen- Bad
Progesterone- Good

And oddly enough, I was taking natural progesterone cream (because my friend swore it would make me angelic) for nearly a year and that's the time some of this "stuff" started with me.

So maybe it was really bad for me? Interesting..

Wow.

Spriggy wait a minute the compounding pharmacist who supplied my cream during menopause said the progesterone was calming also. Maybe during menopause it has the opposite effect. When I raised it it made me more tired. And believe it or not B6 can help with the anxiety before your cycle begins it is a natural diuretic and when you retain water I think some of it goes to your brain. Why else would you pee so much when you get your p. Fondly, Phillipa

Yeah, I do go pee more often.

I also tend to have a bowel cleansing during my cycle- it's weird.

Is that normal?

There's a connection between some ADs and constipation.

I.

Some brands of hormone replacement therapy made me truly crazy. Deeply deeply depressed and scared. I've read some reports where progesterone made women very depressed. Trouble is, you can't take just estrogen alone unless you've had a hysterectomy. And I haven't. So I'm stuck taking HRT that includes progesterone even though I feel it's not good for my mood. I got a new Rx from my gyno this time though- it's for a micronized progesterone, bioidentical, made from yams so maybe it will be better.

I'm waiting to start it until I finish the current pack of what I'm on now. Since it cost almost $50 I hate to through it away and also since I'm also about to try the buspar trial, I don't want to change too many things at once.

That's what I used it won't bother you. You can change the amt of progesterone if you have symptoms. Fondly, Phillipa
