Does Psychotic depression=bipolar?

Posted by med_empowered on November 18, 2005, at 1:35:02

hey everyone! OK...so, now that there's more emphasis on Diagnosing bipolar in the depressed phase, I'm kind of wondering: does psychotic depression (in adolescence/young adulthood) signify bipolar? I experienced psychotic depression, possibly a psychotic "mixed-episode" when I was 17; it happened again when I was 20. I'm 21 now. I'm not on any medication, but I am having pretty bad anxiety...its just, my anxiety seems different from friends who have what I guess is considered a *pure* anxiety disorder. It shifts more, takes on different forms but is always...there. I'm doing OK off meds, I sometimes think a sort of extended "bipolar spectrum" approach could help explain my problems. My *ideal* treatment, if I needed drugs, would be doing things purely as-needed--as-needed benzos for anxiety, as-needed sleeping pills, possibly as-needed neuroleptics if I felt *really* bad. I just feel like daily, long-term medication kind of messes up my psyche's own equilibrium; ideally, I'd just have something to throw everything back into whack and then get on with my business. Plus, I'm just curious...psychotic depression isn't talked about very much, especially in young people.

Hi Med

Psychotic depression in a young person is suggestive of bipolar disorder but it's not diagnostic.

Kind regards

Med, I've heard that bipolar illness is not being diagnosed in kids very young they thought and used to treat as ADD and ADHD. It was on an educational TV station last night. Fondly, Phillipa

I was psychotic and I'm not diagnosed as bipolar. I am now diagnosed as schizoaffectic.

If you can go with out meds, I would.
