Propranolol for anxiety?

Posted by valene on November 18, 2005, at 8:26:05

My pdoc wants to change my beta blocker from atenolol to propranolol for social anxiety. She says that atenolol is not as effective.

I am also tapering off of xanax 1.5mg. The reason I take atenolol is a heart arrythmia, not anxiety! Any thoughts, please? TY

Thats true what she says but ask your doc about

nadolol (better version of propranolol)
or
oxprenolol
oxprenolol retard

With these meds you will have much less sideeffects. Oxprenolol has some ISA and does not loose its effect. Interestingly Nadolol does also not loose its effect although it has no ISA (there are two in vitro and many in vivo studies). Is very effective against adrenaline rush. The retard version you can take once daily if you need to take it constantly.

Nadolol is a more hydrophil version of propranolol thus is not crossing blood brain barrrier that much is causing less drowsiness etc. Nadolol has long-half life you can even take this once daily.

Betablockers interestingly do change your blood lipid profile, oxprenolol should even lessen media/intima thickness inspite of elevetad ldl. Betablockers seem to have antioxidative properties.

If you have heart problems I would probably ask a cardiologist before take them but overall betablocker are some of the most valuable meds ever produced and still used for many heart problems or psychiatric problems.

good look

I took propranalol for anxiety, and it was like a miracle. I didn't realize how tense and anxious I was until taking that first dose -- and suddenly relaxing. It was truly miraculous for me.

In the end, I stopped it partly because the Wellbutrin I'm taking had lowered its effectiveness, but largely because it increased my amotivation. I had plenty of energy, but couldn't quite get it together to use any of it.

Good luck.

I am sorry and dont understand exactly your problem. You are changing atenolol to propranolol because of "specific" social anxiety, but actually take atenolol for heart arrythmia? -Do you go to a cardiologist and a psychiatrist. If you have an arrythmia I would better ask the cardiologist, before you change something. Stopping or changing betablockers in some cases of arrythmia could lead to death.
Ask your doc or better cardiologist.

Sorry to be confusing-- a cardiologist put me on atenolol for supraventricular tachycardia, and my psychiatrist told me the other day that propronolol works better for anxiety, so she asked me to see my medical doctor to switch me to propranolol.

Would this change interfere with my xanax withdrawal? I am tapering off very slowly. Someone told me it is not a good idea to switch medications (beta blockers) during benzo w/d.

Hi Phillipa,
I actually explained why my pdoc wanted me to try propranolol in my reply to SBD. She basically is trying to "kill two birds with one stone": the action of the drug on my heart SVT, and to help with anxiety. She says that propranolol works better and I have received a great explanation on the benzo board of the two drugs. I have my answer. Thanks.
