ritalin and adderall are a bit different in terms of actions/effects (dexedrine is also different, slightly, from those two, and desoxyn has itw own different effects). Now and then, 2 different stims will be mixed--adderal+ritalin, dexedrine+adderall, desoxyn+dexedrine, etc.--but I dont think its terribly common. What appears to be more common is mixing Provigil, the anti-narcolepsy med, with conventional stimulants. I cant really advise you about stimulant mixtures; I dont think they're terribly common, and there doesn't seem to be too much research on doing that. I do remember that recently they found that alot of foster kids in Florida were being **heavily** medicated--something like 40% of them were on meds, many on cocktails..some ridiculous number like that. Anyway, when they looked at the RX histories, they found lots of "unproven, potentially unsafe combinations"...one of those was the use of 2+ stimulants at the same time. I imagine the combo would be best for severe depression, emotional problems complicated by obesity or narcolapsy, or severe, treatment-resistant ADHD.

Stimulants are rough meds IMO. I don't tolerate them easily. Sadly, I have severe ADHD complicated by narcolepsy, and I have to take a TCA to manage the sleep-related difficulties (severe hypnagogic hallucinations and paralysis) which does have a lot of s/e- Strattera had lots too, and caused depression. I nearly burned my apt. down last night because I was so inattentive and fogged after I got home. I had been taking 300 mg Provigil for a little while to keep me up past 6 pm, but insurance wouldn't cover more than 200 mg and the higher dose was causing problems anyway (probably lowering plasma levels of TCA leading to paralysis/hallucinations/ excess dreaming). So I'm taking 10 mg Ritalin to make the Provigil work a little better, though by Thursday I'm shot anyway from sleep deprivation (and I practice sleep hygiene as best I can, try to get 8 hrs. of sleep at least per night).

The meds are wretched, but they 'work.' Ritalin makes me less liable to suffer hallucinations from sleep deprivation, most likely b/c of its NRI properties (by 'sleep deprivation' I mean less than 12 hours per night).

Hi Ya!

A member on this board 'Ame Sans Vie' is taking 45mgs Dex spans and 40mgs Desoxyn tabs daily and says they work great together. I read he is trying to lose 90lbs of med induced weight, and it's helping.

I have read of some ADHD specialists using Ritalin+Dexedrine together also, usually in kids.

Cheers

from the sounds of it, it is maybe...overdoing it a bit to take both? I will talk to my pdoc about it. Maybe it would be an option to take really low doses of both.

Absolutely they are prescribed together - I took Concerta and Adderall when the hypertensive side-effects of Addreall meant I couldn't sustain a full dose of Adderall.

from the Archives....

<snip>
I do remember Dr. Paul Wender writing about a ADD patient who experienced tolerance to both Ritalin and Dexedrine. Wender's clever solution was to continue to switch the patient between the stimulants periodically as the tolerance occurred. (It has since been discovered that Ritalin and the amphetamines effect different dopamine pools in the brain and (at clinical doses) they are not cross tolerant.)
