When did Lamictal start working?

Posted by jclint on November 17, 2005, at 13:23:12

Hi everybody.

I've recently started a trial of Lamictal (for everything really - depression, mood swings, agitation, anxiety, you name it). I feel the best I've felt in a few months really, I think its doing something, but not too sure. My moods are still quite unstable. I'm on 100mg at the moment, I was wondering at what dosage people began to feel the real effects of the drug? I've read that the mood stabilizing happens between 100 - 200mg. Do you feel going up to 150mg will have a better effect than the 150mg? I'm having no side effects, so will probably stick with this one for a while - even if it means experimenting with doses higher than 150mg.

Thanks for your time, John.

Awesome to hear that it is helping, it is the only drug that has stabilized and eased my depression. I am on 300mg a day at bedtime which works for me. Do you have a good pdoc? I am sure he or she is the best to ask about the dosage. Again, so glad to hear that you are being helped by it, I love Lamictal!

Hey, yes my pdoc is very good, its not often that Lamictal is used for people like me in the UK, its not even licenced for bipolar yet. I'm interested to see if I will benefit from any mood stabilizing effects, I'm not sure if I've reached the right dosage for that yet. Yes I'm pleased I'm on it, the first drug I've ever taken that I don't have any side effects, apart from moclobemide (so I'm really praying its the one for me!). Thanks for the encouragement mogger! John :)

John - Be agressive with your treatment. Don't be afraid to ask your doctor for higher doses if and when needed. Especially with Lamictal since it basically has no terrible side effects as long as you increase the dose gradually (to prevent a very serious rash).

Also, when you read about "maximum" doses of drugs, take that with a grain of salt. Many times these doses come from short term studies. But in real life, people are on drugs for a much longer period of time and might eventually require higher doses than that of the studies.

Thanks for the support guys, I appreciate it.

I'd still be interested in hearing people's personal experiences about their own theraputic dosages.

John :)

Lamictal and Weight gain

Has anybody noticed an increase in weight since starting lamictal? I have been on it for about 3 months (now at 175mg/day) and I have noticed a gain of about 10 ponds. I REALLY watch what I eat and I also take 200mg/day of topamax. This is someting that is a problem for me because I have "food issues" but I really would like to stick it out because this med is so great.

Any Suggestions?

Jack

Jack,
I think I gained a little weight when I started Lamictal but it leveled off. I don't think you will gain much more as I think Lamictal is supposed to be weight neutral. See if you can counteract the weight gain by exercising a bit. That is awesome it is working for you, it has been a life saver for me. It is a great med, try and stick it out if it is helping.
