AD similar to Lexapro that will inhibit sexual des

Posted by recumbent on November 17, 2005, at 11:14:34

I have been on Lexapro 10mg for two years and it has generally curbed my depression. Lately, due to family struggles, (caused by compulsive buying and other unacceptible behavor) my anxiety level is up and the depression is back.
Though Lexapro worked great at first, with no sexual side effects, I would prefer to switch to another AD that inhibits desire. It is important that desire is curbed since it is a component of my depression and compulsive behavior. Suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Have you been evaluated by a psychiatrist to rule out bipolar disorder? Uncontrolled spending and excessive sexual behavior are often symptoms of a manic episode. If you are bipolar, the lex could be making it worse.

Please check this out with a pdoc, asap.

Best,
EE

Hi

If you're not bipolar, a higher dose of Lexapro might help. Alternatively, paroxetine (Paxil) might be an option. Again, paroxetine can aggravate bipolar disorder.

I've had only one recent visit with a psychiatrist. But my wife tells me that I will be making others (or else!). I think it's best to seek help, but perhaps a waste of money. I've had many visits with counselors, with some luck, but the underlying driver is untouched. I'll make another appointment. I don't believe I'm bipolar. My symptoms are more in line with ADD and Compulsive behavior. My father has the same symptoms, and recently started taking schitzo medication (and it helped his compulsive behavior)

Thanks!

You want to lower sexual desire? If so, and if you are sure that you are not bipolar, just increase the Lexapro! That will lower your anxiety and depression and desire all at the same time!

Keep in mind that 10 mg is just a starting dose of Lexapro. You can safely go much higher.

The easiest thing to do would be to raise the dose of lexapro.

If you were to switch, paxil could be a first choice and zoloft a second choice. Paxil is notorious for sexual dysfunction, but personally zoloft numbed me out sexually more than anything.

Thank you all very much. I'll see if I can get a script for a higher Lexapro dose. Zoloft sound like the ticket though
Thanks again!

Sounds bipolar to me too. And you're right if you are bipolar and denying the possibility you may find yourself in a psych ward from a fullblown manic attack. Please see your pdoc again. Fondly, Phillipa
