Amphetamine tolerance??

Posted by NISSYNICOL on November 11, 2005, at 0:14:42

Amphetamine tolerance?? How does this come about? I was put on 20 mg of adderall 2 x's a day for appetite suppresant, and to give me a little more energy and I have mild daytime sleepiness. I keep thinking this is my way to finally lose some weight. I would hate to built up a tolerance. I can however still take it and sleep, is this normal? I was on 10mg 2x's a day with no real change that I saw. Also tried Provigil and it just made my brain a bit more awake for only a short time.
Thanks for your help,
NISSYNICOL

Are they IR or SR Adderall?

Take your Adderall with Tums, or Sodium Bicarb, to decrease stomach acid effects-shown to increase Amphetamine effects.

Or simply increase the dose?

Amphetamine tolerance varies greatly from person to person. I've been on stimulants for numerous years and haven never grown tolerance - at least to the stimulant effects. The appetite suppression decreased a lot - is still there a bit - but not as strong as it was years ago.

So I would say - don't start worrying about tolerance if you've just begun stimulant therapy. Yeah some people will tell you they gre tolerance after 3-4 months - but remember that everyone's different. I've been on stimulants for 5 years now and no tolerance or need for an increase in dosage.

Amphetamines are not given for weight control, ADD/HD and Narcolepsy only, in doses of 10-240mgs daily!

Cheers

Dexedrine was and still is approved for short-term weight loss.

Amphetamines/weight loss

Docs can and sometimes do still RX the amphetamines for weight control...my *guess* would be that they'd do this in cases where there are other reasons why the amphtetamines could help (ex: patient is obese and has severe depression, or shows signs of daytime fatigue, ADHD, etc.). Desoxyn, Dexedrine, and Adderall can all be RX'd for weight control; with Adderall, I think the idea is to give 1 pill, 3X daily, and try to keep it below 30 mgs (maybe 40?). Although diet pills are usually withdrawn, I imagine you could keep someone on low-dose Adderall for a while--that would help prevent weight gain, and it could help them with underlying issues.

I just thought I'd add in here that I am currently prescribed two different amphetamines -- Dexedrine 15mg Spansules x3 each A.M. and Desoxyn 5-10mg four times daily -- for the combined purposes of atypical depression/dysthymia, ADD, social anxiety, amotivational syndrome, and yes, my general practitioner and my psychiatrist both sanction its use for me for weight loss. I also take Xanax, Xyrem, multiple OTC supplements, and dextromethorphan 30mg twice daily, which I've found to be absolutely essential in succeeding at not developing tolerance any time I'm prescribed amphetamines. The dextromethorphan (as well as l-tyrosine powder, one of the supplements I take) is an enormous help, because I've been really working on losing the ninety pounds or so that psych drugs have put on me since about 2001. I'm using an Atkins-like approach, but with more emphasis on importance of choosing healthy fats and getting proper nutrition. Anyway, I'm at the phase of the diet now during which I've slowly reintroduced a small amount of carbohydrate into my diet (about 100mg daily, for fiber and nutrients). I've found the added carbs, while important to maintaining renal health and other things on this diet, make my appetite double what it normally is. My Dexedrine/Desoxyn combination addresses this wonderfully. It certainly isn't disappointing me regarding its other prescribed purposes either.

Regards,
~Michael

They are just the regular adderall immediate release. Not the XR - extended release.

Phillipa,
I have excessive daytime sleepiness (a mild form of narcolepsy). This is the number one reason my Doctor prescribed Adderall for me. I was on provigil but that pooped out fairly quick for me. But I do also have weight to lose(which I gained from binge eating) so he thought maybe that would be a good choice to maybe address both issues at once with Adderall. Now had I gone in there and said I want you to put me on Adderall so I can lose this weight, he'd have said I don't think so. And I have been seeing this P-Doc who BTW, specializes in Eating Disorders for a couple years now and I can tell you that we have tried many different things and trying Adderall is not his number one choice of therapy.

Michael,

Thanks for your reply. Can you tell me how this dextromethorphan helps you not to build a tolerance to amphetamines? I did a search on it but I guess I am not getting the connection.

On further research, looking at Ovations Pharms site, their Desoxyn, IS indeed indicated for SHORT TERM obesity^ perhaps your eating disorders specialists prefered choice?, as i have read of a patient on it describing it as "Anorexia in a pill".

I was still under the impression that for regular weightloss, ONLY, without comorbid ADD/depression in the average patient, that Amps were a nono.

Cheers

paulbwell,
Sorry, my Doctors prefered choice, for me anyway has been eating healthy, exercise and stress management for the eating when I am not hungry. I do have Major depressive disorder so I do find exercise hard for me to do because I just can't seem to motivate to do it. I have been on several different antidepressants in the past but am currently on Cymbalta. Which BTW, I switched to from a high dose of Effexor XR 450 mgs. that I had been on for years and I had no withdrawl or side effects whatsoever. :) So , I think with my excessive daytime sleepiness and the provigil not working for that anymore he decided to give the Adderall a try. OH, and where did you hear about taking tums with Amphetamines to increase their effects? Just curious. Thanks,
:)NISSYNICOL

It's well known (listed in the PDR) that Urinary alkalinisers-sodium bircarb, calcium carbonate, result in less of an acid environment and more efficient use of Amphetamines.

Many people have felt greater effects from Amphetamines with taking sodium bicarb products before and/or after their Amphetamines, allowing them to take less, or potentiate the effects, this apparently doesn't work with Ritalin.

Cheers

Speed removes Calcium, from bones and teeth!!

I have just read that 'speed' (does this include Dexedrine,Adderall, Ritalin?)reduces Calcium from bones and teeth, and they reccommend Magnesium and Calcium supplements.

No wonder my teeth are not as good as they used to be.

scary!!
