What's Go;ing On?

Posted by Phillipa on November 15, 2005, at 0:24:09

It seems a lot of Babblers are anti-drug now. What's going on? Have we all woken up or are we kidding ourselves. Fondly, phillipa

I call it the "Babble Tide" and it ebbs and flows. If you are around for a while you will see it too. You can look at posts for meds in general or singularly and you will see support for and loathing of over time.

I think it's borne out of personal experiences, opinions, theories, etc. and respect that. This board used to have more positive reports of successful med use but they are rare now and I have my own personal ideas for why that is.

What I have found is there are some deep antimed folks and then there are partial antimed folks who continue to research and who still are trying to find a chemical intervention that can be of help. When it boils down to it, it's frustrating and disheartening for a number of folks and this can give way to some intense anger and very strong feelings. I think we all just want to feel relief from our struggles.

Just my opinion....

Thanks Nick. I like it when I make sense to someone other than myself. (smile)

How are you doing?

Please share! The reason that's usually given is that people who are doing well on meds feel no pressure to post. More people with PROBLEMS are drawn to support/info boards. That makes sense to me. After all, no one at the HP forum posts "My printer never jams. Any advice?"

(And I hereby promise, if I find a med that works, I will still Babble.)

> the "Babble Tide" ... it ebbs and flows

I go through my own cycles about meds. I once shocked myself by bursting into tears in a pdoc's office when she prescribed a med. She asked what was wrong. I said, "I don't want to go through all that again!" meaning pinning my hopes for my life to this med for 8 weeks with no benefit, then that med, then a combo, then an off-label desperation....

I went through a few years of feeling (discreetly) self-righteous and "THERAPY FIRST!!" too, but I got over that. I'm now skeptical-but-supportive about many of psychotherapy's claims.

I'm flowing to the med side again this fall. Peter Kramer's "Against Depression" is what put me here this time. Plus, there's this exciting off-label med I read about....  ;-)

~~~ I think when folks are doing well they may not feel the need to post. To be honest, sometimes the negativity of a board can get to you. I have posted about doing well on a med and a good 75% of the postings I would receive back would be about the ruination this caused for others or the dangers, or I just wasn't sick enough to begin with, or it's not going to last..... stuff that wasn't fun to read. It's almost as if SOMETIMES postive stuff is given the: "Yea, BUT..." treatment. I understand that, but it's not something you particularly want to hear if things are going well. That being said, some folks are really gracious and kind even in light of circumstances not going that well for them. Like all postings, you never know what you'll get.
~~~ I have tried to do that. I think it's important - even if you encounter naysayers, it's the princple of a successful outcome despite the specifics.

~~~ I wish you much luck. Hope and optimism can turn into something really good.
I give the strong impresson that I am anti-med, in some ways.
I am not against the concept of an antidepressant mood stabaizer etc, but it just seems more and more apparent, (with the growing number of people I discuss the issue to), that medications have the potential to strongly influence one's life to the negative.
Meds were great for me when they worked, but they stopped working, and I am living with the consequences of their effects (mainly significant dystonia, and ballance/movement problems) I have friends around the same age who are suffering similar seemingly permanant effects. One good friend has been off paxil for 5 years but still says it feels like her head is being twisted to the left (I get the same sensation constantly)
I want people to get better as much as the next person, but I'd feel horrably fraudulent, in light of all that has been presented to me, to embrance psychiatric medications with open arms.
