Mild concussion and mild personality change

Posted by Squiggles on November 13, 2005, at 11:14:33

I may be wrong about this, it may be
transient, but since banging my head
and getting a painful concussion for
a month, I seem to see the world with
a new perspective. I rather hope
it lasts as it is an improvement.
I'm still taking
my drugs of course.

Reading about head injuries and cognitive/
emotional changes, i see that this is
an interesting new field of investigation
(for me) to research.

No, Linkadge...not a good idea! I work with some brain injured (or head injured...whatever the term of the day) clients, and the majority of brain injuries turn out to be mildly or extremely negative. Yes, there are exceptions, but I don't think you really want to take the chance and turn out to have a very negative experience. It, at times, can make living with Depression seem like a cakewalk. I've had clients who used to be engineers, doctors, lawyers, turn into the most unbelievable of personalities.

I imagine it might be a little like ECT -
nobody responds exactly the same way.

Reading the literature on this is fascinating --
the childhood and adolescent accidents may
be responsible for adult changes in mood,
cognition and motor skills, such as
language. This may be understimated in
comparison to the causal links they are
trying to find in genetics.

It would also suggest a more global neurochemical
environment that is responsible for mental
disorders.

Or like smacking the VCR when it doesn't work.

Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't
