Seroquel as Anti-Anxiety / difference to zyprexa

Posted by sdb on November 11, 2005, at 18:18:25

Hello there,

I have heard from people and from studies (above all connected with bipolar illness )seroquel would be good against anxiety.

<Is there somebody using seroquel successfully against anxiety, and which subtype of anxiety (GAD, SAD, PD)?>

I suppose seroquel would knock sombebody out because of daily tiredness. I have myself taken a zyprexa for bp and it knocked me out (almost two days constant sleep).

Maybe Seroquel is a bit different there too.

Kind regards

sdb

Tried it once and it knocked me out. Fondly, Phillipa. Maybe a low dose over time the symtoms would have ddisappeared. Fondly, Phillipa

I took it a few times ( 50 mg's). It knocked me out but I didn't like how it knocked me out. It felt very forced; like I was INSTANTLY drunk.

Anyway, I would start out at a low dose (maybe 25-50 mg's) and see if that helps.

I was taking it for anxiety- it did seem to help but made me very groggy.

I take Seroquel for GAD

It has been an absolute miracle drug for me, the first of 30+ I have tried since 1997 that worked.

It just terminates that rush of anxiety energy. Just nails it. The downside is grogginess throughout the day, but that has improved with adjusting the dosage ... and drinking some caffeine.

Id start off with 50mg, or cut that tablet in half. You will feel it within 30 minutes.

UgottaHaveHOPE,

Thanks for sharing information.

Do you take the Seroquel only for GAD or also for other anxiety subtypes and do you take the dosage once daily or divided? How long does one dosage last? Do you take Seroquel primarely for GAD or also for other things indicated for Seroquel?

Thanks for answering a lot of questions.

I've tried both, and I think seroquel is better for anxiety. But as everyone else has already said, there is usually some grogginess.

Zyprexa has worked for me in the past in stopping anxiety and panic attacks dead in their tracks. But the problem is that it takes two hours after dosing for that to happen, for me. So I was clock watching a lot waiting and waiting. But when that two hours finally arrived, wow, what relief.

Seroquel seems a lot faster, like about half an hour.

Regardless of which one though, the good anti anxiety or anti panic stuff only lasted about 4 to 6 hours for me, and then I would need more.

>grogginess

Do you mean it is similar like a benzo feeling for example xanax, or is it only tiredness / sedation?

How much is your dosage for the 6 hour relief of anxiety with Seroquel?

About 50mg seroquel worked good. 2.5mg or 5mg zyprexa worked good. And no, it isn't the sedation part of it that quells the anxiety. I believe it is the receptor blocking part of it that does the job. They do work as good as benzos, for me anyway, but they feel different than benzos. Hard to explain. Benzos shut down overactivity in the brain, whereas the antipsychotics block the overactivity so you can't feel it.

the olanzapine sleep properties could be of affinity for H1-Receptors similar as Zotepin

Blueberry that explains it then. When I was in the hospital the seroquel combined even with chloral hydrate xanax only kept me asleep for four hours and dose needed to repeated. They upped the dose over two days from 25mg to l00mg per night. And when I almost fainted and couldn't talk they discontinued it. The wierdest part of it all was one week after discontinuing it my face puckered up and lips peeled. Any comment on the drying up a week later. It is a mystery to me. Thanks, Fondly, Phillipa

blueberry, I like to hear you have found something good against anxiety after 30plus meds!

Phillipa, blueberry how would you compare xanax xr to seroquel and Zyprexa. Xanax Xr sedated me only, similar compared to Zyprexa but not for two days...

I now pharmacology about the neuroleptics but I have almost no personal experience.

Hi UgottaHaveHope,

You are saying Seroquel is a good drug for you see, but it also seems Klonopin is the drug of choice for you:

What do you use now?
How do you compare those drugs?

sdb the third time.

It's very interesting Seroquel is in trial for SAD by Davidson, Jonathan MD

http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct/gui/show/NCT00215254

I am always wondering how drugs differently act on different individuals apart from every pharmacological knowledge. It's a lot of alchemie. And there are so many medical students and also docs who believe "more serotonin in synaptic cleft means more happiness". MD's are so dummy actually (I dont want to generalize), I know that.
