Lamictal PoopOut: Top Psychiatrists Don't Know?

Posted by Smith563 on October 2, 2005, at 17:52:50

Hey Everyone,

I have experienced lamictal poopout multiple times. I have also read about multiply other poster complianting about this as well. Lamictal give a solid mood boost for 2 to 3 weeks, then poop out. This repeats itself every time the dose is increased.

I recently attended some conferences and wrote to 3 top bipolar researchers. Each individual stated, "Never have seen Lamictal Poopout." I don't get it. Help.

Smith

Smith- I think that people for whom a medication doesn't work tend to write more posts than people who are successful with the same drug.

I have definitely heard more good things about Lamictal than bad. If you are on the maintainence dose (200 mg or possibly higher) and it is controlling your mania, anxiety, impulsiveness, or concentration, I would stay on it and add an antidepressant such as Lexapro, or a drug like Seroquel which has antidepressant effects.

I'm having good success on Lamictal in conjunction with 60mg of Cymbalta for bipolar2. (I'm also taking Campral for alcohol cravings.) Adding an antidepressant sounds like a good idea to me.

Smith,

Is it you? You've got the green things saying you're a new babbler.

It's amazing and really pisses me off! My pdoc looks at me like I have a third eye when I mention Lamictal pooping out or even side effects!! I need to find a pdoc who has actually taken these meds so they can at least speak from experience!

Re: Lamictal PoopOut or still cycling?

I think I've been getting lamictal poop-out but then again I was rapid cycling before I went on the lamictal and so maybe it's just that I am still cycling. I do seem to get a boost after each dose increase and then seem to go downhill but my records aren't good enough to show that the pattern is definitely consistent. With a cyclical depression I find it easy to associate the depression with this that and the other thing (like maybe it came today because I didn't force myself to go for that walk yesterday afternoon). Anything to explain what brought it on yet again.
