Can Prozac cause more anxiety

Posted by rubenstein on September 9, 2005, at 13:47:25

Four weeks ago my pdoc upped my dose of prozac from 20 mg to 40. Lately, I ahve been so jumpy, almost ready to burst out of my skin. He took it back down to 20, but I didn't feel right there either. Anyone have any experience with dosage of prozac on people with anxiety and prozac. I guess I should mention I am pretty small. 5'0 and 108 lbs. Maybe that has something to do with it? Any suggestions would be appreciated, especially to help rid myself of this never ending anxiety.

I was on Prozac for about a month last year. It was too stimulating for me...I felt very wired. Didn't like it at all.

Prozac was bad for my depression/anxiety. It didn't do much for may anxiety and actually made me more depressed rather than less so. We upped my dose a few times b/c we just thought I wasn't taking enough, but then we realized what was happening, so we stopped it. Apparently this sometimes happens. It doesn't mean that a different SSRI won't work for you.

Best,
EE

Prozac can be overstimulating to the point of anxiety and/or agitation. For me it was fierce, almost like paranoia, couldn't sit still, scared, couldn't sleep, very jittery, awful. I absolutely need an antipsychotic to calm it down. Prozac works so much better with an antipsychotic.

When the prozac dose is too high and causing overstimulation, the problem is that it takes days for it to fade out of your system. Its half life is about 7 days, so if you took 20mg today there would still be 10mg of it left a week from now. It takes forever with prozac to adjust doses up or down.

I just switched to seroquel instead of zyprexa, and am letting the prozac wear off. But even two days after my last prozac dose, I can still feel it as if I took a dose today.

But yes, prozac can be extremely activating to the point of terrifying uncomfortableness.

Prozac did not have that effect for me but everyone reacts so differently to meds. that it is very possible prozac isnt right for u or ur body cld. still be adjusting?. there are many other meds. out there that may not cause this effect. i wld. talk w/ my doc asap. take care.

Prozac made me feel like I was crawling out of my skin. i stopped taking it immediately,

unfortunately, that's how all of this works. different meds affect everyone differently. what may be a miracle drug for me may do nothing for you.

i think ive tried about everything out there, the only other big reaction i cam remember was paxil making me hungrier than ever.

but hang in there. try something else.

Meds affect everyone differently. Paxil caused me to have no appetite...5'3 and 140 at the time (that is very thin for my build!). Effexor and wellbutrin cause me to have no appetite but prozac, zoloft, lexapro, etc. increase my appetite??

My pdoc recommended Celexa because it has such low side effects, maybe you should consider talking to him/her about that. I'm on it for depression and anxiety, and I have found it works well for depression and I am still trying to gauge the anxiety benefits. I take an Ativan when I'm very anxious. THe first week was very hard when adjusting to Celexa, and I found that I was so tired that I could not function at work, so I now take them before I go to bed. It works now. Like people said, everyone is different and you should go with what feels good for you. Unfortunately, there is that period where you do what to jump out of your skin. GOod luck.

Hey, thanks. I'm 6'2" 280. I've lost 10 pounds but I awake each am with...what else, anxiety. I'm taking 40 mgs. of prozac. Just started Wellbutryn but to be honest, the only time I can get rid of the little dogs snapping at my ankles is when I take some hits of whiskey.
supposedly not a good idea. Still, f*em if they can't take a joke. Mental Illness must be
laffable to the med profession. However in my case, violence is never far beneath the service.
I know better but, don't give a damn.
I'm going to see a new Pdoc. But If he gives me this low dose sh*t, whatever it is, I will sincerely pitch a bitch. Us full-gigured guys are not run of the mill. Right now I'm on a trial dose of 300mgs xr wellbutrin. and I don't feel like the idiot I can be when I get angry.
Thanks for your post It gives me hope.

Are you still taking the Prozac with the Seroquel or are you on a different antipsychotic?
Thanks,Karen
