Zyprexa and Effexor

Posted by MEJ on September 1, 2005, at 9:21:59

Hi there,

About a year ago I slowly weaned off Effexor and experience TERRIBLE withdrawal. I lost a tremendous amount of weight had backlash depression so bad I admitted myself into a crises centre for two weeks...but refused to go back on because I was so afraid to come off. My pdoc prescribed Luvox which lifted the depression a bit, but put on maybe 5 pound in 6 months.

So after a lot of angst and research, I asked my doctor to put me back on effexor..has been four weeks now...feel a lot better moodwise and energy wise..but don't seem to be putting on any weight. Not losing mind you. My appetite is fine..eat three healthy meals a day and a couple of snacks in between when I can fit them in....

So yesterday...concerned about my weight my doctor told me that Zyprexa has been suggested for mood disorders and that it puts on weight really fast would I consider stopping Effexor and switching...I told him I was TERRIFIED to stop effexor...so he suggested that I take a small dose (2.5 to 5 mg) of Zyprexa for a couple of weeks in addition to Effexor and see how I felt..he says if there are any problems I can just stop without any withdrawal (which is what scares me). He said normally would not prescribe a medication for its side effects but since Zyprexa also works for mood disorders, a small dose might be just what I need...

Does anybody have any experience with taking these two meds together? Or any experience with the effects of Zyprexa?

Anything at all would be helpful...thanks!

definately puts on weight. it makes your body not know when it's full, it isn't continually and will eventually subside. i think a low dose 2.5 or 5 would work great for this.
i'm on 10 and gained 23lbs. i was slightly underweight before now i'm little overweight but my pdoc says he thinks i still look good and that i needed a little gain.
i also need help getting to sleep zyprexa has some sedating effects but strongest at first. may not be that bad at a lower dose though.

best luck
b2c.

Thanks so much for your input! Since going back on the Effexor I too have been having some difficulty sleeping...Zyprexa may be just the thing I need. Thanks again for easing my anxiety

Zyprexa is great for anxiety and sleeplessness. Works great for mood disorders. It is one of the best drugs out there. I've taken it for 7 years now. Only complaint is that it makes me want to eat.

Such a small dose that you are talking about won't have much problem with weight.

Thanks for the info...it has been two days now and both nights I have slept better than I have in over a year!!! I wake up feeling refreshed too! I am actually about 15 to 20 pounds UNDER weight and want to put it ALL back on maybe and 5 to 10 extra (miss my curves!!!)I noticed right away that I was hungrier....even though I am on a small dose I think it should help me to put some of the weight back on because I have a smaller body mass than most...what do you think?

I also notice that it relaxed the jaw tension that I get from Effexor...I think this is a good combination for me.
