s/s serotonin variant more depressed responds less

Posted by linkadge on August 30, 2005, at 17:27:04

I have been reading on the variants of the gene that encodes for the serotonin tranporter.

It seems that people with the s/s variant of the gene have a higher lifetime level of depressive episodes and depressive responces to traumatic events.

But get this. The people with this variant don't respond well to SSRI's. Which makes sence since they already have a slow reputake of serotonin.

According to a few studies, people with the short variants of the serotonin gene respond poorly to antidepressant medication.

Perhaps tianeptine would offer more hope for people with the s/s varient of the serotonin transporter gene?

is there s/s gene testing available to the public? (nm)

Thats what I'd like to know. It would be nice to see what varient of the serotonin transporter gene I have inherited.

Yes, there is from what I can find... in clinical studies, some testing for SLC6A4 in BPD.

Speaking of genomic testing, there exists a test for specific P-450 cytochrome metabolization; it is new but may give information on people who are fast metabolizers or are on a polypharmaceutical combination of medications

Interesting. If my genes were wanted for a study, I'd be first to slob the swab.
