Giving up on Lexapro

Posted by 4WD on August 24, 2005, at 21:21:04

I had been on Celexa 10mg. Still some anxiety and dysthymia. Switched to Lexapro 5mg for two weeks. More depressed and more anxious. Lowered dose to 2.5mg for a week. Less anxious but more depressed. Upped dose to 7.5 mg for a week. Less depressed but much more anxious. Tried 10mg for one day. Anxiety skyrocketed. Altogether I've been on Lex for a month. I have less fatigue but I am sleeping badly and feel much more anxious than on the Celexa. Also, Lex side effects much more intense than Celexa. Have I given the Lexapro a fair trial?

For me, Lex did upramp my anxiety for quite a while, maybe 3-4 weeks. Using a benzo consistently during this time was VERY helpful. At about 5 weeks, things started to look really good with it for me. It was gradual which also made it difficult to see progess, but it was worth the wait for me. I began and remained on 10 mgs the entire startup.

Lex has been a good choice for me, but it's so variable individually with all these meds.

I would suggest Klonopin (worked for Glydin) for maybe a month or so. A lot of people take Klonopin for the anxiety caused by SSRI's. After that, is sleep is the only problem, I take 1 mg of Lunesta which works very well.

I was on Lexapro at 30mg for 4 months, combined with Klonopin, 1mg 3x/day, and 1500 mg of DLPA and 10mg of Selegiline, before I ever noticed any remission from anxiety and depression.

If you stick with 10mg of Lexapro, you'll, well... let's just say it's a starting dose.

Oh my, if I took 30 mg of Lexapro I wouldn't be able to move my head at all. Or breathe or swallow (nasal congestion and dry mouth). My neck gets so stiff and tight at 10mg that I can't stand the pain. All the ssri's except Paxil do that.

How on earth did you manage a 4 months trial of no success without giving up on it? I read another post here some time ago from someone who said Lexapro took 4-5 months for it kick in for him. There's no way I could wait out 4-5 months of no results. How did you cope?

I take just five milligrams of Lexapro and 300 of Wellbutrin. Before Lexapro I cried every day. Post Lexapro, no more tears, but no more orgasms either!
