Prozac takes a little longer than the other antidepressants because it takes longer for a therapeutic level to build up in the body. I think 6 weeks is a reasonable length of time for this drug.

My guess is that Cymbalta helped the anxiety almost right away. This might not be the case with Prozac. Prozac can actually cause anxiety initially. This may or may not disappear, but if you are going into a trial of Prozac, this is a side effect that you should be aware of. If your anxiety is actually a symptom of the depressive illness itself, it should get better when the depression begins to remit.

If the depression seems to get worse, and yourself having suicidal thoughts, contact your doctor as soon as possible. Just about every antidepressant has the potential to make someone feel worse if it is a bad chemical match for their system.

Good luck.

And yet, I can't help but think of Gabbii's experience with Celexa. She went through hell starting on that medication. She describes feeling so much worse in terms of her depression but the doctors chose to keep her on it. Then one morning she woke up feeling a lot better. So how can one know when to throw in the towel and when to try to stick it out?

Good question. I threw in the towel with prozac after 3 days as it made my anxiety intolerable. Fondly, Phillipa

You're right.

I think you need to have something that I don't have - experience as a clinician. I guess even that isn't always good enough, but it's more than what I've got to offer. That's why I try to defer to people's doctors rather than take on the responsibility for making suggestions myself. It is a fine line to walk. I'm sure I cross it often.

Hi,

Actually, I think I may have been wrong. (I know from reading your admin posts that you never are, but I am occasionally.) Anyway, after rereading one of Gabbii's posts, she talks about the hell of starting on Celexa - but in terms of the panic, not worsening depression. I posted a question to her for clarification. Maybe severely worsening depression is not something that ends up turning around on an AD?

Ok I take back my last message to you. Gabbii said that getting on to Celexa was hell in every way for her and then it suddently turned around.
