BENZO (BDZ): Which affect SEX life less?

Posted by neo on July 16, 2005, at 12:57:52

I currently use for anxyety/insomnia low dosage of Chlodesmetyldiazepam (a long life derivate of diazepam) with good effect on anxiety and even on insomnia but with a awful side effect.
After 1 week of continous assumpton i loose every attitude to sex life (no libido, no ability about sex).
My experience on other BDZ is limited, so i would like to know if in your experience, there are some benzo that affect less sex life.
On Diazepam was the same, but these two are "ansiolytic bdz" and perhaps "Hypnotic bdz" could have less effect on sex life?
I thank you very much if you coul help me with your share!

Every benzo I've taken has affected sex adversely. Apart from taking the minimum effective dose and less than that, I dunno. Whenever I'd use less it would come back.

Tnank you Declan for your post.
I am foreinger and, so, unfamiliar to the currently language. Please let me know if i have understood well the meaning:
Every Bdz gave you negative sex side effects.
But using minimal dosage or less, than that those side effects were minimal or not at all.
I am wrong?
Thank you again.

Hi Neo!

You're taking chlordemethyldiazepam (EN)? Perhaps you could try a lower dose.

Hi Ed!

Yes I do!
I currently take 0.6 mg of EN at nite.
I really don't know if less than that dosage could be enough for induce an acceptable sleep.
The CDdiazepam has a very long life (ab 100 h) and i think that it will accumulate on every dosage.
What about Hypnotic benzo? Sometimes i think that sexual disturbance is dued the axyolitic effect of drug like diazepam or lorazepam.....but i could really wrong!

Best for you!

Hi Neo,

>The CDdiazepam has a very long life (ab 100 h) and i think that it will accumulate on every dosage.

It will accumulate for the first few weeks that you take it, I expect this is the cause of the problem. After the first week of treatment with EN, you can reduce the dose. This should maintain the positive effects but with less side effects.

>I really don't know if less than that dosage could be enough for induce an acceptable sleep.

If it's not, you could take a short-acting hypnotic such as zolpidem (Ivadal, Niotal, Stilnox in Italy) at night + a very low dose of EN to help with your daytime anxiety.

>What about Hypnotic benzo?

All benzos are anxiolytic, including the so-called hypnotics.

Kind regards

~Ed

PS. Can you buy EN without a prescription in Italy?

Yeah, every benzo gave me negative side effects sexually. But minimal doses probably have some negative effects there too. When I cut down from 24+mgs/d bromazepam to 6mgs/d (a long time ago) sex drive came back strongly. I had very interesting dreams too, when I slept.

Hi Ed,
Great counseils, I agree with you!

> It will accumulate for the first few weeks that you take it, I expect this is the cause of the problem. After the first week of treatment with EN, you can reduce the dose. This should maintain the positive effects but with less side effects.
> If it's not, you could take a short-acting hypnotic such as zolpidem (Ivadal, Niotal, Stilnox in Italy) at night + a very low dose of EN to help with your daytime anxiety.

Yes, I think i could try in this way:
xlow dosage of En (f.ex: 0.3 mg) for anxiety + a short h-life benzo for sleep (currently have lormetazepam in my med bag).

> All benzos are anxiolytic, including the so-called hypnotics.
Yes, true, even if i think that any benzo have a predominant hypnotic effect and others a major anxiolytic effect. However, i have no understood yet if this particularity is important in the side effects that a benzo produces.
Sometimes on "anxiolityc benzo" (f.ex. xanax) i feel disconnected and satisfied, and this do not help sex really! Sometimes on so called Hypnotics i feel a sense of tension and palpitation....neither this helps sex, i think.

> PS. Can you buy EN without a prescription in Italy?
Unfortunely, no. But my "family doc" is always available to try and prescribe anything that could work for my anxiety.

Thank again Ed and all the best to you!

Thanks Declan for your infos!
I read that you are in accordance to Ed (read previus post) that xlow dosage could, probably, reduce any side effects.
I will try in this way, cutting down the dosage of the anxiolityc benzo and waiting that someting will happend. I will add someting for sleeping.
Thank you again and good luck to you!

Hi Ed,

Yes Minias, You know very well italian meds!

Triazolam and another one that i don't remember the name.

I discover that Melatonine (1.5 mg) help me to sleep quickly, with mild somnolence in the early morning. Do you know any conta-indications about the use of this one like a sleep inducer? Could worsen anxiety or depression?
If it will work well without any s/e i could think to take it with a xxlow dosage of En for control daytime anxiety. Sounds good in your opinion?

Best regards

Hi!

>Yes Minias, You know very well italian meds!

LOL, not really! I looked the Italian name up! We don't call it Minias in the UK, it's only available as generic lormetazepam here. I work in a pharmacy. We do use some meds imported from Italy :-)

>Triazolam and another one that i don't remember the name.

Temazepam?

>Do you know any conta-indications about the use of this one like a sleep inducer? Could worsen anxiety or depression?

A few people find that it worsens their depression.

>If it will work well without any s/e i could think to take it with a xxlow dosage of En for control daytime anxiety. Sounds good in your opinion?

It does sound good.......so long as you don't have any side effects from melatonin.

Kind regards

~Ed

PS. Are you a man or a woman? I'm curious LOL!

Hi Ed!

oh yes, i'm a middle age man.

> >Triazolam and another one that i don't remember the name.

mmm...probably should be alprazolam. Stange effect for this drug, isn't true?

So, i think i could try with this program. If melatonine doesn't work or worsen my depression/anxiety i could swich to lormetazepam.

If somenting don't work in the righ way i will post again for further information and help!

Thank you again for your helpful infos and counsels, we will meet soon on the board!

Kind regards
