Marplan-Is it making my anxiety worse? Help

Posted by Tom Twilight on July 17, 2005, at 10:12:10

Hey everyone

Sorry I've been posting a lot lately, I'm just not in a good way

My anxiety seems to have got worse since I went up to 20mgs of Marplan last Wensday

I've heard of Parnate worsening anxiety, can Marplan also do this?
Are MAOIs like SSRIs were the anxiety gets worse intially and then improves?

I'm crawling out of skin here

Hi Tom,

>Are MAOIs like SSRIs were the anxiety gets worse intially and then improves?

Yes, that can definitely happen....although it seems to be less common than with SSRIs.

Can you get a small dose of diazepam to take for a couple of weeks? eg. 2mg three times a day. I know it's not easy to get a prescription for diazepam but it might really help you while you adjust to the isocarboxazid.

Also.....I think your anxiety might be worse than normal due to withdrawal from your previous medication. This should pass in a few weeks.

Kind regards

~Ed

PS. I got your email :-) Sorry for not replying to your babblemail yet, I've got so many emails I don't know where to start LOL!!!

Hi Tom,

I was thinking........ perhaps you'll only need a very low dose of isocarboxazid. Maybe you're very sensitive to MAOIs. Even 20mg seems to be having quite a profound effect.

Just think of the SSRIs, some people only need very low doses. Sukarno only needed 1mg Prozac to prevent panic attacks. Some people are very sensitive to SSRIs.

.......In the same way, some people are ultra-sensitive to MAOIs. Perhaps you'd respond to a very low dose eg. 10mg isocarboxazid if you stayed on it for a few weeks. Don't give up on isocarboxazid so soon. Please! Return to 10mg for the time being. The therapeutic effect can take weeks to develop. A pinch of diazepam might help you in the mean time.

Tom, I dunno I said this somewhere else, but I noticed 1/2 (75mg) a tablet of moclobemide a day. So I was on 1/4 of the recommended starting dose, and you read that some people need to go up to 1000mg/d or more.
If you lower the Marplan you can always increase it later.
