Is it possible to sue a psychiatrist for not addressing an issue with concern.

I AM MAD!!!!!!!!

Last time i started in the eye and asked him why do you chose not to do this? this would bring me so much relief i could just have a scan please!

Im sorry there is no need for one. MY GOD IM LOSING MY DANM MIND!!!! YOU HAVE SEEN PATIENTS FOR HOW LONG? 1952! I AM GOING INSANE!

We will start a nueroleptic if that is case.

I am so angry with him right now, i am going to do something.

There is really nothing he is doing legally wrong. MRI's are *not* a routeen diagnostic tool. Ie, most psychiatrists are not trained to diagnose psychiatric problems via imaging techniques. Yes, you use an x-wray to find a broken bone, but not a broken mind. Unfortunately, these problems are a lot of guesswork.

If the symbyax doesn't work, then don't take it.

I am doing something about my former pdoc, so I will pass on what I've learned. None of this applies, of course, if you're not in the US, and some is likely to be different in your state if you are.

1. There is a "Patient's Bill of Rights" of a sort, which says that you're entitled to be treated with respect. It doesn't say, though, that your doctor can't provide a reality check, by telling you that he won't order a test you don't need.

2. Suing involves a lot of time spent being asked questions by people who won't be very nice to you, and you'll have to repeat all the things you think are bad over and over and over and you will not be able to get away from them and move on with your life.

3. You can complain to the state licensing board, but even then you'll have to explain to someone why you believe his refusal to order a test has damaged you. That would be an awfully hard sell, kiddo.

4. There are sometimes patient advocates that can help you decide whether or how to approach your doctor about getting a test you think you need. Again, though, the doctor gets to make his opinions known -- including the fact that he doesn't see any need for the test.

OK, Matt, why do you think that an MRI will help you? I'm middle aged, I have a dx of Major Depression, Anorexia Nervosa, and Anxiety Disorder NOS. I've had these disorders since the late 1970s. In that time, I have had one MRI -- for a head injury which was affecting my vision in one eye. For the other disorders? The disorders that are in my head? I've talked to doctors, who have told me their diagnosis of my disorders. That's how most psychiatric disorders are diagnosed.

So why do you think an MRI will help you?

What is it that you mean, specifically, by "losing your mind"? What symptoms are you experiencing that makes you believe this?

What has your doctor said as far as diagnosis?

Hope something in here helps, kiddo. I'm sorry to see you in such pain -- but I'm even sorrier to think of you wasting energy on the thought of suing your pdoc, when there are so many other things you could more productively apply that energy to.

It was a sencere expression of the need that we all have on this board, and that is to be given the decency and respect that we all diserve.

Most doctors don't care enough. They don't listen. And for that, I am angry too.

Hi Matt
Does your mother actually go and see the doctor with you? I'm a little surprised that he would agree to see you under those conditions.

Yes, I picked up on that, too.

Matt, your mother does not have to be included in sessions just because you are on their insurance. You have the right for confidentiality, and you also have the right to keep and maintain your own medications. Can you perhaps contact someone in social services to serve as an advocate for you in dealing with your mother? Could you see a therapist to help you cope with her needs regarding being overly-involved (in my opinion) in your life?

Why do you feel so convinced that an MRI would help you? An MRI is
useless unless there is someone who can interpret the results in a
meaningful way, and to the best of my knowledge, that someone does not
exist (in the context of general psychiatric treatment).

Such lawsuits help drive up the cost of malpractice insurance for
doctors. Since those costs are are passed on to consumers, I wouldn't
expect a lot of sympathy from readers.
