I don't think that bipolar can be diagnosed with a scan really. In mania there is more activity than in depression, but this is not conclusive.

can you get firm with your doctor and specifiacally ask him what his reasoning is, and that this condition is causing distress.

Stare him in the EYE.

When i get fet up with mine, you can pull law books out and read statements, that may threaten his licence.

If mine does do anything, im getting a lawyer.

Like I said, most doctors are not trained to use brain scans to diagnose mental illness. There are only a remote number of doctors who do this, and their work is controversial.

Dr. Amen does do brain scans, but some people citicize his work because it is not an exact science.

Its not that it is theoretically a bad idea, but the science is not at a level where the common psychiatrist can take a brain scan an turn it into a correct diagnosis.

For instance. Lets say the brain scan showed prefrontal cortex hypofunction.

That could indicate, bipolar depression, unipolar depression, schisophrenia, ADD, ADHD, chronic fatigue syndrome, etc.

All diseases that are treated entirely differently.

The only reason they'd do a brain scan is if they thought you had brain cancer, or brain dammage due to an injury etc.

I don't even think that SLS has had a brain scan. And he's had ECT !

Link, I've had more than one. I was dx'd with chronic Lymes' disease. And they even checked for MS. Fondly, Phillipa

More than one brain scan? THey might be more usefull in certain disorders like MS. But I've never heard of a routeen scan ever been used to diagnose depression.

Link, I don't know if you know anything about lymes disease but they create spirochettes. They hide in all your body tissue. They can cross the blood brain barrier. They did 2 spinal taps too. They were clear. The interesting thing is i just got my medical records from the Infection Control specialist who has treated me and the number one dx is Lymes/meningitis. They never told me I had meningitis. They also have chronic fatigue syndrome on the list and further down is anxiety/depression. I need my medical records for a visit to the Taste and Smell Center in Washington DC. I also lost my ability to taste and smell. It can be related to lymes. Also lymes causes anxiety/depression. The lymes was picked up on a routine blood workup from my old pdoc. I spent 30days in a psych unit being treated IV for lymes.Fondly, Phillipa

Link, It's more than interesting. It can pop up again anytime. The spirochettes can be immune to antibiotics. And the osteoarthritis I think I have can be too. The spirochettes are of the same type syphylis is. And when a lymes titer is positive so is one for sypylis. They they run other tests to rule it out which they did. Another fact is syphylis sometimes manifests itself in the elderly before they had antibiotics to kill it as dementia. So my anxiety/depression could be a part of lymes disease. Also after the Iv tx they continued to tx me with long acting biaxin which also can cause loss of taste and smell. There was a girl or woman on here back in May who Babbled me that she too had lymes and was seeing a lymes specialists somewhere in upstate VA I think. She was supposed to get back to me with what she found out. She didn't. I'll have to post on health and see if she sees it. I'll also google lymes and see if it comes up. Fondly, Phillipa

Actually the first workup that my daughter had at age 4 for symptoms of ADHD, etc. included a brain MRI. And my first workup for Fibromyalgia also included a brain MRI to r/o MS. My doc said once that it's not likely, but you don't want to miss anything.

You've mentioned the problems you've had with your mother, but what about your dad? Is he totally unsupportive or unconcerned?

There is help out there somewhere for you and I'm dismayed that your parents aren't advocating for you.
