Does anyone know it there is a generic Lexapro? One of my good friends doesn't have insurance and was prescribed Lexapro, but really can't afford the price. Any advice? I am trying to help her, and I am looking to all of you on behalf of her. -L

No, there is no generic Lexapro. But its predecessor Celexa (Citalopram) is available as generic. It might work just as well as Lexaapro.

I agree w/ the above. Have her ask her doc to change the rx to Celexa which she can get generic. My read of the literature is that there is no huge advantage to lex over cel. Many people speculate that it was produced mostly for the drug company's financial gains (i.e., they no longer had a patent on cel).
If for some reason cel doesn't work out, she also could try some of the other SSRI's that are available on generic like prozac or paxil (although i personally HATE paxil).
Best,
EE

Maybe she needs a new doc if s/he is prescribing things that are very expensive when she has no insurance. An attentive doc would have brought up the celexa/lexapro issue with her. Either that or the doc didn't know anything beyond what the sales reps say...an equally scary possibility...

Lexapro is a relatively new relase to the market. There is no generic equivelent. It is a more efficient version of Celexa. Pharmaceutical companies do this to extend the patents on the drugs. Celexa is very similar to Lexapro and I believe there is a generic.

You would think the pdoc would have samples. The whole time I was on cymbalta the pdoc gave me samples. Fondly, Phillipa
