Is that all you get? Eight minutes? I had one like that for a little while. I *hated* him. Only saw him a few times, then I got a better one. Do you have any alternatives?

I.

I had a doctor like that. Because he could barely remember me or my history, I would type out a brief summary and my recommendations and give it to the receptionist upon check-in. After going to his office, sometimes he would not notice the note, and I would remind him, it's there, in your clipboard. Then he would read it and the conversation would start in my direction.

warm regards ~Jake

I go to Dr. Seven Minute. It is so very tedious to get your situation in clear perspective within this time slot.
Don't see the point of five minute reminders of who I am and what I'm here for, leaving two minutes to get to the point in fast talk. Appointment time and script time are misaligned, I am so confused with what and when I am supposed to do what. Like it is part of trick question 13-1/3. I want to simplify my life, noone likes to play this way. All is fast and confusing for no good reason.

Pdocs today are only supposed to be there to rx and change your meds. They want you to see a therapist who records on the chart and advises what you need. Only problem is how to find a good therapist. Had many and they were horrible. Fondly, Phillipa

Its just a big waste of time for me. I'm not even going to work myself up about this one. I did that last time and end up more depressed after the aptment went terrable.

Link, I really do know what you mean. I see mine on the 28th. She'll laugh and ask me what I want to take. She doesn't care. Fondly, Phillipa

Allo Jan. Here in Canada, there is no need for a therapist. Our psychiatrists do a complete job, i.e. they do care both about medication and short therapy. At least they are supposed to...

Bye.

It depends on you. Prepare your appointment (notes) and take the lead. Begin to think about it right now. And most important, be honest. I took or i didn't take this med completely. I like or i don't like this med... I, I and I.

Good luck!

I had completely prepared for the last appointment, with med lists, side effects lists etc. He just glanced at them. Remember I was out in 8 minautes.

I don't see how this guy is supposed to be a therapist. He doesn't do anything like that for me.

What you could try to do is send the pdoc an e-mail with the things you INTEND to have discussed at your appoinment, including your current state of mind, medication options and other related issues. If he has an outline of your issues and discussion items in advance of the appointment, you can go in and go through the contents of the e-mail, item by item with him. I have actually sent my pdoc e-mails between appointments and in advance of appointments so he knows what to focus on at my appointment. And, I would suggest that you call his office to verify the length of your appointment (how much time you are REALLY entitled to, not how much time the guy is willing to spend). It is incomprehensible that a pdoc would spend only 10 minutes with a patient. Sounds like you are being ripped off. If the secretary tells you that your appointment is 15 minutes, then when you book your next appointment book two consecutive appointments back to back to ensure you have sufficient time and attention to discuss your issues.

Good luck, Link. My thoughts are with you. It can't be easy having to deal with an indifferent doctor, on top of everything else you are going through.

You can get your pdoc's E-mail address? They don't give them out here. Fondly, Phillipa

I don't have his direct e-mail. I send the message to his through his secretary. He always gets the message, and, if there is something that needs to be discussed in advance of an appointment (e.g., disconcerting side effects or prescription refills), then he calls me back himself. He is pretty good. And, I am also fortunate in that he always spends an entire hour with me. To bad Link couldn't come to my city (he is about 5 hours away I believe) to see him. He always listens patiently to suggestions, and has been agreeable to some meds I have wanted to try. He did tell me, however, that he knows of pdocs who have an "in and out" policy (20 minute visits). As far as he's concerned, you can't effectively treat a patient only spending that amount of time with them.

That just doesn't happen here. All the pdocs have a time limit. Mine just gets up and walks toward the door. Fondly, Phillipa

If you have a crappy doctor an hour is no more helpful than 10 minutes, just more expensive.

I pay for an hour, I get an hour.

I've been fortunate enough to be seen by a great pdocs where I live. He does not take insurance, which is fine as I don't want my DX on any insurance records and he did negotiate with me a bit on rate ($100/hr, or $75 for half hour).

I decide how long I need when I setup the appointment and when it's just a med checkup, he has been cool and let us stop early and let me pay for a half hour.

Now I realize that everyone cannot afford this kind of pdoc, but I do get what I pay for!!!
He's kind and has let it slip that he's also sampled all the illegal substances that I have so there is a large element of trust between us, as I do have substance issues.
