why is luvox so UNpopular?

Posted by krybrahaha78 on July 15, 2005, at 0:10:55

I have an autistic brother and his doctor prescribed Luvox for his OCD, but the state (medicaid) denied it and wouldnt pay for it but would pay for something similiar to it. Most doctors wont even prescribe this medication. I think this is an awesome drug and works better than alot of others out there for OCD. Anyone have any thoughts?

Strange that medicaid denied it because its been generic for I think more than a few years. Solvay withdrew its NDA for reasons unknown, the drug was safe. I've certainly taken it for OCD parts of my symptoms.

Its probably the most sedating of the SSRI class of medications (I find you either have to sedate the anxiety or excite the depression but that's just my system). It was one of the (I think first ?) SSRIs that was actually approved specifically for OCD although they all work in varying degrees, including the pseudo-SSRI Anafranil which is sort of a gold standard for some severe forms of OCD.

I dont know about "most doctors" -- perhaps non psychiatrists/psychopharmacologists who are only limitedly learned in the SSRIs may only feel comfortable prescribing the most recent but it doesnt follow that then they are the best for OCD.

Hope that helps

I've been told that, because of some weird regulatory thing, Luvox is not available through the drug company compassionate care program right now, but that the company involved is trying to rectify that. I didn't pay attention to the details, but it basically means that patients using the needy meds type programs can't get it right now, but might be able to in the future, once the paperwork gets sorted out.

That might also effect Medicaid's ability to get it cheaply, in which case it would come off their formulary.

In your brother's case, has he been on it before? If so, maybe the doctor can appeal it and have it provided ex-formulary. There are contingency arrangements that allow that, if you're willing to fight with a clerk with a high school education who wants to tell you that your doctor is obviously wrong...

Good lucck.

Gee my anxiety must have been sky high. At one time I was given 250mg of luvox along with 6mg of ativan and 5cc chloral hydrate. I felt fine. I've been trying it again and haven't taken it in three days. It doesn't seem to do a thing and my chemistry has changed since Menopause. I am only taking valium now. But maybe that was why I was falling asleep while reading in bed at night at 50mg. Fondly, Phillipa
