SSRI (Prozac) Thought blunting

Posted by JayDee on July 14, 2005, at 16:22:58

Do MAOI's cause the mental sloness, loss of creativity and thought blunting that prozac seems to have caused me? I love the reduced axiety and calmness but I just cannot keep up in school anymore.

I wish to consider switching to a (MAOI) because I do not want to lose the mood-stabilizing/anti-anxiety effects that prozac has given me. is the maoi less likely to make me dumb?

please respond!

I once experimented with tranylcypromine (Parnate) at a fairly wide
range of doses, but the effects were somewhat inexplicable. For example,
it seemed to cause a sense of fatigue and drowsiness while at the same
reducing the desire for sleep.

No one can say with certainty what will happen. Unfortunately, I have a
feeling that the classical irreversible MAOIs such as phenelzine
(Nardil) and tranylcypromine are not going to give you the side-effect
profile you're after.

There is some evidence that certain serotonin uptake inhibitors are less
likely than others to adversely affect cognition. Sertraline (Zoloft) in
particular has compared favorably on this measure in several human
clinical trials. That's something to consider, especially since it
sounds that you've benefited some from Prozac.

People complain about mood instability on Parnate sometimes. No antianxiety effect really. It's just a nice sort of effect, a bit like a smart drug perhaps.
Nardil might be better for you if you want to take a MAOI.
