stimulants ok?

Posted by xbunny on July 12, 2005, at 11:43:51

I read quite a few posts here where people say they have anxiety, edgyness, difficulty concentrating, even feel like they are losing thier mind etc and they also say they are taking some form of stimulant, I seem to count a lot of posts which list adderall xr. It surprises me that no-one ever seems to says your stimulant might be your problem. Would not a stimulant be likely make such symptoms worse or even be causing them? Im genuinely interested I have only ever taken illegal stimulants and all the warnings about illegal stimulants are that they can make edgey and anxious and even paranoid and psychotic. As far as a I know its very hard to get prescribed a stimulant in the UK but less so in other countries, it seems a lot more posters than I would expect are taking a stimulant, are they really more ok than I think?

Hi Buns,

I've been working in a very busy (UK) pharmacy for the last two weeks - we dispense about 800 items a day. In the whole two weeks, we've only had ONE prescription for a stimulant - for a child of course ;-)

I have offen wondered this when reading about folks here on high Adderall or Dex doses complaining of Insomnia or other nervous issues, however Stimulants can, and do calm and centre many,

Cheers

I am least anxious when my adderall is working. It's when it wears off that I get anxious. I am normally anxious, always have been. Wasn't until dx'd with ADD and added the stimulant that I felt a sense of calm during the day.

For some reason UK docs are very stimulant phobic

The stimulants we have are very imperfect it must be said
It certainly is possible that high dose stimulants can worsen anxiety for some people

When I was taking Dexedrine I did become quite anxious, although if I were on it again I would do the dosing differentlty

It must be said though that stimulants are not the Devil Drugs that most UK docs believe them to be!
I personaly found that Dexedrine made me a lot less anxious than Caffeine

I also found Dexedrine to be a lot easier to discontinue than most ADs, I was able to stop cold turkey without to much trouble

I'm on two stimulants, my mind is still there, just disorganized :) Still sleep like a lumberjack and need an alarm to wake. I'm not anxious or paranoid yet. They did raise my bloodpressure enough though for my Internal Doc to get upset. Right not I alternate one and keep the other constant and measure BP several times daily. If I ever figure out a trend that definitely correlates with one or the other I'll let you know.

I have also heard that they can make one psychotic. I guess that's more likely if you take too much or take it with other illegal drugs.

If taken in the recommended doses, I think that they are supposed to be about the safest of all of the prescription drugs. The exception is Cylert (pemoline). Cylert can cause liver problems in some people.
