will someone remind me it gets better than this?

Posted by holymama on July 5, 2005, at 18:40:38

I am at an all time low after going off my 6 bipolar meds a couple of weeks ago, being hospitalized, and put back on 3 meds. I have been back home for almost a week and I CANNOT FUNCTION. Maybe I am a slight bit better, but I cannot watch my children for more than an hour, I have been breaking down crying, and am so agitated and irritated at everything that I have thrown a few things. Every situation, every thing seems so overwhelming.
Now, I have been hospitalized once before, and I've definitely had nervous breakdowns before, so I am aware that it is possible to recover (only to do the whole thing all over again ...), but this time something is different. I don't want to solve this problem with drugs. My last pdoc fired me when I went off my meds, so when I find a new one, their answer to my complaints (like, "I'm feeling agitated") is always to add another medication!! If someone offers me another drug, I think I'll scream!!!! I am beginning a relationship with a homeopathic doctor and am looking into a pdoc who is into alternative meds. Has anyone else gone this route, and is it possible to feel better without using more meds as an answer? I feel like this is uncharted territory. ~~Autumn~~

i feel u- i'm kinda in the same boat, see my post above titled lexpro help...i feel totally alone with this right now and feel like i'll never get better. However, i've been trying to go back and read my past journals and see how it's been better. It's helped a little today but not much...hang in there...

Hi there
I've seen a nutritional/holistic type doctor who essentially uses no drugs, or very few. He uses the sorts of things you read about on the alternative board. I've made a great amount of progress with him but the results have been steady and accumulative rather than dramatic, over the 4 or 5 years that I have seen him. It has probably been better at staving off future problems (diabetes, atherosclerosis, degenerative diseases) than solving current ones. I imagine things like bipolar would need conventional intervention. But the least toxic drugs in the lowest therapeutic doses. It shouldn't be an either/or situation.
I use both and I just get by, but it could be worse and it has been.
Good luck
Declan

Hi. It does get better and you do have options. I've been feeling pretty hopeless myself the last few months and resisting the idea of taking half a dozen meds.

I've just started seeing a naturopathic psychiatrist. I also want to take as few meds as possible. We're starting with an evaluation with a Dr. who does acupuncture and hair analysis. Also going to do blood tests for B12 and some other stuff. In the meantime, I'm going to continue with my Celexa and Lamictal and supplements. The new pdoc wanted time to look at all the info I brought in and lists of meds I'd tried & the results and give it some thought before prescribing.

Hang on. Remember that you've just been through a really rough time. It may take a few weeks to get evened out.

Marsha, I'm all for natural remedies and vitamins, massage, chiropractic care. But I've been told the hair analysis is not accurate. Think of how long it takes your hair to grow. How you were at one length isn't what you are now. Does this make sense? Fondly, Phillipa

Yeah, it does, I guess. Anyway, I saw the guy and he didn't recommend hair analysis anyway. He wants to see all my lab work first. In any case, I'd like to know what was going on three months ago when I was still so terrified that I was crawling around in the floor crying.

Marsha, Really this is a joke but how fast does your hair grow? Could you cut off about where it was growing from the scalp at that time? Fondly, phillipa

>actually if i were u i wld look up the accuracy of hair analysis b/c i know that testing can be done from the hair and go back years ago to test for many things. its not the length that they test, its the particle taken from the scalp.

Caroline, I didn't know this. I haven't heard of doing this form of testing for many years. Could you explain how the proceedure has changed? You could Babblemail if you wish. Fondly, Phillipa

I don't know how they go about it. I mean whether they check the tips to see how you were 6 months ago and at the roots to see how you are now? Beside that, I highlight my hair so they'd have to dig around for some non-bleached strands.

That makes a lot more sense, then. Apparently they check for trace minerals and some other stuff. I know they can tell from your hair whether you've been poisoned or have smoked pot so why couldn't they tell other stuff?
