Should I ask sleep doc for Xyrem?

Posted by jerrympls on May 20, 2005, at 1:54:21

I see my sleep doc for the second time tomorrow to - hopefully - find a sleep med to get me back on track. I'm nervous he's going to throw his hands up and say "You've been on everything...there's nothing else to do." Don't some sleep docs prescribe Xyrem for sleep disorders?? Or am I mistaken? Should I ask him to put me on a barbituate? UGH! I just know he's going to say there's nothing else to try - and I HATE HATE HATE it when doctors- especially specialty docs throw up there hands. I KNOW there's got to be some secret tricks that sleep docs can pull out for hard to treat cases - right?????

Please someone respond - I have to see him in the morning - around 8:30am. I'll check my email for posts...I hope someone out there has been to a sleep doc and/or knows about Xyrem (sp?). Should I even ask about it??

Help!
Thanks!!
Jerry

Hi Jerry, I was too late to respond to your post. How did it go. What I was going to tell you is that I have heard of Ultram being used as a sleep aid. I also think you should ask your doctor for barbituates if that is what you think you need. You have already proved that you are trustworthy with meds.

If the doctor responded the way you thought he would i would have said "well no, we haven't tried everything. We haven't tried these things. You may be willing to give up, but I am the one who may lose his job because I can't get enough sleep. Your job is secure. So let's see what we can come up with!"

Have you ever gone to sleep clinic overnight?

I know you suffer really badly from insomnia. I hope you find some relief out there.

I hate specialist. The psychopharmacologist I saw said that ECT was the only answer for me. I said "No, I won't have it". Turns out my Advair asthma inhaler was causing a big part of my depression and all of my irritability! I am writing him a letter. He is the specialist. He should have known that a corticosteroid can make depression worse. I knew it but had been on one for over 10 years that I never thought of it. If it hadn't been for CK1 posting, I would still be in misery. I'm not in great shape, but I am a hell of a lot better than I was.

Fight Jerry.

Maxime

Hey!

Well, I decided to reschedule - because I couldn't SLEEP last night!! LOL! But you're right - I should tell him "You're not the one who's losing a job - I am - let's try XXX!" I have my overnight sleep study in June.

Interesting that your Advair inhaler caused so many problems for you - I am on Advair as well - but cannot tell if it is making any impact on my mood positive or negative. I'll have to look into that!

That's classic Jerry!

Chek out this site where people talk about the side effects they get from Advair http://www.medications.com/go/se/Advair

Using the Advair might have something to so with your weird cortisone readings. One woman developed full blown Cushings syndrome from it.

WEll good luck with your appointment!

Yes doctors do prescribe Xyrem for sleep disorders. I recently saw a neurolgist-sleep doctor for my problems and last week did a sleep study and we are waiting on the results before he recommends a treatment. He said Xyrem was one possible treatment, (I inquired about it) and that he had about 200 patients who use it. He said the major drawback was the necessity to take it twice a night, so they didn't usually prescibe it unless other "once a night" medications were ineffective, or that you have an obstructive breathing problem. I see no problem in asking about it, I've learned that if you're passive with doctors you don't always get the best treatment. Keep posting.

Jerry, re. the Advair, you don't take that too close to close you bedtime do you? Because the Albuteral in will keep you up.

Hi Jerry,

Did you say you had low cortisol? Advair can cause low cortisol by inducing adrenocortical suppression. Not long ago, docs in the UK were warned about prescribing high doses of inhaled corticosteroids (in children) due to reports of adrenal suppression and numerous associated symptoms.

Kind regards,
Ed.
