Anxiety or apathy (take your pick)

Posted by linkadge on May 5, 2005, at 19:16:19

I cycle from anxiety to apathy. If I'm not apathetic, I'm anxious, if I'm not anxious I'm apathetic.

Can't break the cycle.

Right now I am supposed to be taking clomipramine, but with it I have strange periodic body convulsions.

I think I might go back to zoloft if possable.

I completely relate to this viscious cycle. I believe that the more time on my hands, the more aware I am of these feelings of discontent or anxiety.

Well, I seem to be plugging zyprexa today (or whenever I infrequently actually post here) but zyprexa may help both. It does for me, and I noticed further improvement with the addition of provigil.

I know the feeling. Every day I wake up and I'm bored, but can't just sit and read a book. Have to be doing something. Fondly, Phillipa

I found that ALL the serotonin drugs caused apathy..in fact I believe that this is the response that manufactures intended when developing SSRIs, etc. I think that's why we see so much variation in dosage, and "tweaking" of dosage when it comes to these meds.

Some degree of apathy is needed to subdue anxiety, ocd, depression, etc. The only meds I have taken that have allowed me to retain a full range of emotions (without apathy) are the MAOIs. I would recommend them to anyone who wants to be able to function normally, respond to life normally (laugh and cry appropriately).

At one time, I thought nothing could be worse than true depression...until I experienced complete apathy.

You're right. At least with depression, you're alive. With apathy, you're dead.

I used to be mostly apathetic. Then I got overwhelmingly anxious when I went off Effexor. (When I tried going back on it didn't work anymore, even for anxiety).

I wonder sometimes if I get myself into a state of overwhelming anxiety (after it starts on its own with just a very scared feeling) simply to feel alive or to feel something.

Which would you rather have Linkadge, if you had to pick one? Anxiety or apathy?

Marsha
