Klonopin - does somebody not have sexual problems?

Posted by sdb on April 18, 2005, at 10:51:36

Hi males,

I do quite well with Klonopin (1.5-3mg) daily. According to studies this dosage is often recommended. I have taken it more than a week. But after I have taken it for some days i am "asexual". No libido, no erection. Does somebody have this, have this not or have even the opposite? Or does it go away with time?

Thanks for every response and sharing experience.

hi! Psychiatric drugs do crazy things with sex-drive and performance ability. Personally, Klonopin at first made me decidedly **more** sexual/sexually active. I guess its the "disinhibition" thing. Who knows. Anyway, first eliminate the possibility that Klonopin is causing or worsening a depressive episode...it can do this, apparently more so than some other benzos. Step 2: see what doses seem to have the worst effects. Common sense would say higher doses=worse effects, but this isn't always the case, so check it out. Step 3: Since you've only been on Klonopin for a little while, it may just be the sedative side-effect that is killing your libido...sometimes smaller doses spaced throughout the day helps, sometimes it doesn't. If the problem continues, you may want to try another benzo...xanax/xanax xr is a possibility, though I'd personally try Tranxene. Good luck!

I'm just a female sorry. But I wanted you to know that WE have a libido as well. We have the need to get aroused. Both males AND females are sexual beings by nature.

I'm on a super low dose so maybe I shouldn't weigh in but so far, it hasn't affected me in that area. I am also female though so who knows?

I'm generally only in the mood 3 maybe 4 times a month at the most. So if it gets much worse, my poor husband will die. LOL

Thank for your response.

Could you precise your experience? -You said first you had an increase in activity. How was that in the longterm? Does it now has influence on erection and libido?

According to studies Klonopin increases fertility (!) in rats but could have negative impact on steroid metabolism.

Somebody else has personal experience in that matter with Klonopin?

Thanks for every response.

I became totally impotent right away on Klonopin. My doctor insisted it had nothing to do with the drug, but I knew it did. And once I stopped the Klonopin, the problem went away.

Interestingly, I have a increase (first two days) and then a decrease effect. I dont think the increase effect is due to disinhibition, I suppose it is because it has some influence on the cardiovascular system.

Does somebody have a decrease-increase to normal experience?

Sorry to weigh in like this , but I ALWAYS carry a Levitra in my pocket (used to be Viagra) for when the anatomy and the meds are in conflict. This rare, but it happens. I think long term clonazepam use decreases libido, while initial use probably increases it.

And is there some pleasure anyway?- I dont believe it but there was a male in this forum saying he has continous increased sex drive with Klonopin.

Levitra definately works, but if your depressed you can go through the motions, but pleasure is reduced.

I also rarely use Levitra or Viagra. When I do it's generally depression related not med related. I take .5-.75mg of klon daily and have for many years.

Hi all

I rarely use pde5-inhibitors but i would prefer tadalafil. Sildenafil can be pretty dangerous if you have low blood pressure. I once took half a pill and my blood pressure sank very rapidly when I was driving with my motorbike in the freezing winter time (it was -12 degrees). At home I had a crisis, seeing black, swooshing in the ears. I had to pull down my head to let flow blood back in to the skull. Above all, I am still alive!

Overall i think the pde5-inhibitors are not good enough to bring back the stolen sex life by clonazepam.

Every other experiences and advices are heartily wellcome.

Hey,

I experience libido and erection problems on Klonopin. It's apparently one of the worst offenders among the benzos:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=9160580&dopt=Abstract

While on the K, I found the herbal supplement Maca to be of some use in overcoming the sexual issues. But I think that the Maca might also have been anxiety-provoking with consistent use.

After switching from Klonopin to Valium, the sexual dysfunction pretty much went away. I've since switched to Ativan (the Valium was too sedating/mentally bluntin) and haven't had problems with it either.

That's my story...

I think for me personally sexual problems occurr above or occassionally at .75mg. Anything below does not affect.

I have only taken the benzo Klonopin yet.

Could you tell more about lorazepam? Is it as long-acting than Klonopin, how many dosages daily? Does it cause depression and even more forgetfulness as Klonopin? Is it as effective as klonopin for anxiety?
As you stated it seems not to affect sexual capability?

Thanks

Every response is welcome

Ativan is not as long acting as Klonopin. The half-life is about 10-20 hours, and I'm still trying to figure out what the "acute" half-life is.

I find it better than Klonopin for anxiety: with Klonopin 1.5 mg/day (TID dosing) I got very sedated/slow with a relatively small reduction in anxiety. Taking Ativan 3 mg/day (TID dosing) I'm getting a better reduction in anxiety w/out much sedation.

As far as sexual function, it's weak right now. But I can't tell if that's because of the Ativan due to counfounding variables: a higher Depakote dose and dysphoric/depressive episode. Sorry to be not much more help there...

Best,

If I was writing my own prescriptions I'd probably switch to ativan for a trial of it again. I do not remember it being as cogntively impairing or sedating as clonazepam, and I certainly do not remember it contributing to depression.
