Benzodiazapines and what you say?

Posted by rainbowbrite on April 17, 2005, at 21:46:37

Have benzos affected the things anyone says? When I take them I end up saying much more than I would normally. I dont take them that often but I get somewhat loopy on them I think and just free flow words. At relatively low doses too. After the effects wear off I cant figure out why I said certain things. Is this normal...Is it just that they disinhibit?
Thanks

Again this is one I will have to refer over to my good friends at http://www.benzoforum.org -- they are all benzo users and have the answer to any question you could possibly come up with! Be sure and let them know Mw1984 sent you as well!

Regards,

Matt

yes it is normal , benzodizepines purpose is to releive anxiety. they act like having a few beers. read the side effects you got with it. one should be "disinhibition" or "feeling drunk". there ya go

Hi!

>Have benzos affected the things anyone says?

Yes! Benzos tend to make me quite rude and impulsive, even at doses which are not sufficient to relieve my anxiety.

Ed.

Hi Matt!

I have a question. Do you think you would have been able to study medicine without Xanax? (I think you said you've been on Xanax for a long time)

Kind regards,
Ed.

Ed,

I highly doubt that I would have studied anything without it. I was pretty much a hermit and inspite of having registering for classes I refused to go...

However, I now am attempting to withdrawal from them -- wishing I had found another way originally...

Regards,

Matt

Are you doing a diazepam taper?

Ed,

I am not doing any taper actually... 50% of long-term benzo users can quit cold-turkey with minimal adverse effect.

I was originally going to do the cross-taper (Ashtown?) but that would put me at completion 18 months down the road. Aside, I am just eager to move on without my little crutch.

Sunday @ 2PM was my last 3mg dose of Xanax XR. The rest is just history right?? =D

Also have arranged access to seconal with my attending should it come down to it... which it won't...

Thanks for asking Ed!

Regards,

Matt

Hi Matt!

>I am not doing any taper actually...

Why not do a short taper? If your anxiety returns you could always use a small dose of Xanax (as opposed to 3mg).

>Also have arranged access to seconal with my attending should it come down to it...

You could just use a benzo.

Ed.

Ed,

> Why not do a short taper? If your anxiety returns you could always use a small dose of Xanax (as opposed to 3mg).

That would be defeating the purpose, pro re nata use is likely to lead only to worsening of overall withdrawal symptoms. Like... I could jump off the horse once, or just hang on to the reigns and let it drag me around...

> You could just use a benzo.

I could, but frankly - seconal just sounds like so much more fun. =D

Thanks much Ed,

Matt

Hi Matt,

After your withdrawal is complete, you could consider using Xanax prn for severe anxiety. I do not know whether this will be necessary, it's just a suggestion. Benzos can be very useful for the prn treatment of severe anxiety.

You *may* be physically dependent on Xanax but you are not a 'drug addict' AFAIK! There is no reason to avoid Xanax completely in future, prn use will not re-establish physical dependence. It's only necessary to avoid a drug completely if there's been a psychological 'addiction' eg. alcohol in a former 'alcoholic'.

I'm not sure why you've decided to withdraw overnight, I would not want you to experience intense anxiety or have a seizure.

Ed.

Ed,

It's not overnight per se, and perhaps I am crazy for wanting to withdraw immediately. I can only say that I am not gaining anything by taking the Xanax other than a stigma from my peers.

I have no addiction - psychologically, and I would have anticipated physical withdrawal symptoms to have began to precipitate by this point. Undoubtedly I will experience some symptomatic withdrawals, but I have a stable mindset going into this and that is a large factor to consider. ..

Inspite of my medical training, my B.S. in Psychology still holds water in that there is much to be said for "mind over matter."

*Also - the treatment was originally treatment for agoraphobia, not relative to panic nor generalized anxiety.

I much appreciate your concern -- and I am definately paying attention to what signals my body is sending. However, you need not worry - granted the fact that I am not. =D 3mg b.i.d. to zero, that has to be some kind of world record right??

Thanks again Ed!

Matt

When it's all said and done. I wish I would have been more patient or had found another solution as well. 3mg seems high to just stop especially for Xanax. But I agree from experience that at least for me it's easier to just come off and suffer like hell for 2-3 weeks than to drag out incresed anxiety over 18 months. Slow tapers were actually harder than say stopping 1mg clonazepam cold turkey.

In May I shall follow.

Scott
