THIS is what I am up against

Posted by Maxime on March 24, 2005, at 1:40:40

I can't sleep.

I am exhausted but I can't sleep.

I have a friend who lives in Alberta. She is my closest friend (albeit 2000 miles away). We met in the psych ward in 1999.

She has been going downhill for a few weeks now. She started to go psychotic (paranoia) and then stopped all her meds.

She has been through it all. Several rounds of ECT, every med you can name. So in desperation she calls her pdoc who called the police. I receive a call about 5 hours ago from her sister to say that she was going into the hospital.

I just receive this email from my friend.
-----------------
Hi
I am not in the hospital after all. When the doc on duty assessed me, and then referred me to the "Team" they decided I was not at risk for a seizure, and as I am not about to do the deed, they had no reason to keep me.
-------------------
She is going to call me tomorrow and tell me everything. But I am so angry right now. I hate the system. I hate it.

I'm going to take a bunch of sleeping pills now so I can escape. Not an OD. More than I should take but nothing that will kill me. So please don't worry. I am just so upset right now. At least the pills will stop me from cutting.

Please be careful, Maxime! The system is so obviously broken for those who need it (let's hear it for health care for all). People just should not be left "to the wolves" like they are - it's absolutely inhumane.
I hope you feel better when you wake up.

I can understand wanting to just sleep and escape. It was the only time I ever had peace when I was at my darkest point.

I hope your friend can somehow get help and that you can get some much needed rest.

I responded to your post above about " I am here".

Like I said up there, I am praying for you.

The problem is there is not enough money to keep a person in the hospital unless they are acutely psychotic, Threatening to kill themself or someone else. If you don't strongly plead suicide than they will release you and send you to your own pdoc. I'm assuming it's the same in Canada. I guess your friend needed to be almost dead or running up and down the streets claiming to be the Queen of England! I'm so sorry. But, please be safe and get back to us later. I'm so glad you're posting. Any chance that you and your friend could live together while you're both having such a bad time to support and help each other? Fondly, Phillipa

Hey Maxime

I hope you are doing better. I'm new to psychobabble so I don't know much about your situation, but I can tell that you are a very caring, thoughtful person. You have responded to my questions even though you where in such pain. You must be a very brave and strong person to have gone through what you have.

I was surprised to read that you live in Quebec, Canada. I live in Ottawa, Ontario. Someone mentioned the ROH, do you live close to Ottawa?

I look forward to getting to know you better. I wish you the best and hope that you are able to get some rest. I hope you didn't take too many sleeping pills, my mom took too much Ativan by mistake once and she ended up throwing up a lot.

Sincerely,

Jenny (Shy_Girl)

hey! Just thought I'd chime in--sorry about everything you're going through, but I'm glad you feel comfortable enough with everybody here on the board to share some of what's going on with us all. Anyway, I think this is one of those situations where it's best to look at the best potential outcome rather than dwell on the current negative situation or the worst possible outcome...maybe its a little self-deceptive, but its also a more comforting and, I think, empowering way of looking at big problems one faces. I hope you feel better, I hope your friend feels better, and I hope the two of you (you and your friend) are able to help each other through this time. My thoughts are with you.
