Strattera and orgasms

Posted by fredBT on March 22, 2005, at 3:28:23

Hello Folks,

I'm on 40mg of this for almost 3 weeks now (I have Depression, OCD, and ADD)... I have to say that my sex drive is not as it used to be before taking Strattera (but I could still maintain an erection when in "focus"). However, that's not the main problem...

The problem is that my "O" ends before it even hits it's peak, plus there is a post burning feeling down to the groin/anus area... Does this normally happen to those who have taken Strattera early on? Does this subside in the long term or at least lessen to a degree that it isn't that much of a "nuisance"?

I have had kidney stones/infection before (tiny ones) in my mid-teens that thankfully didn’t last long because of water therapy and antibiotics as instructed by our family doc, but since that time the frequency of my urination hasn't changed (I have UTI symptoms *frequent returns to the toilet* even if my lab prognosis says negative). Furthermore, the “pressure” of my urination is lessened by a large degree that at most times it is just like a dribble of an old faucet (pathetic). I only get strong pressure temporarily when for example I need to “go” after being stuck on freeway traffic for a long time… I have been given meds by a urologist to control my bladder but the side effects were worse than without it. Taking Strattera has exacerbated these symptoms a bit, and worse it has affected my sex life with my partner… I have consulted with my shrink about this, but she says it is too early to tell and given more time and dosage changes the effects may not be as bad…. What do you guys think? Do I also need to consult a nephrologist? BTW, I’m just turning 29. Thanks for reading.

regards,
fred

Strattera is known to make it more difficult to urinate. It is prescribed not only for ADD, but also for urinary incontinence.

Strattera also causes sexual side effects in some people such as you have described.

You said that you have depression. What other medications do you take? Many of the antidepressants can cause sexual side effects.

Hi Bill,

I take Zoloft for my depression but I also tookEeffexor for a while before (it helped my depression but not anxiety symptoms), so I went back to Zoloft. The sexual side effects of Zoloft were not as apparent (just subtle) compared to when I started taking Strattera. I also take Lamictal for anger management.

Zoloft is 25mg and Lamictal 50mg, both dosages once daily. My prior dosages were higher, I was weened off to lower dosages before I started taking Strattera, and now maintain the dosages above for the time being.

BTW, I also take Rivotril 0.5mg before bedtime... Thanks for replying.
