paranoia and medication

Posted by Angela2 on March 22, 2005, at 13:55:08

I'm thinking about going off my medication. I take it for paranoia. It's an antipsychotic. I used to think that people were talking about me if I couldn't hear what they were saying. Since the medication, this has stopped. If I go off my medicine, will this start again?

Hello,

Do you have a diagnosis?
Which antipsychotic do you take? What dose?

Ed.

PS. Why do you want to come off your medication? Any side effects? How long have you been taking it for?

All the questions Ed asked...

AND, I suppose the only way to know is when you stop, if you start feeling that way (or thinking that way) again, that means you still need the meds.

Why do you need to know what dose? Why do you need to know what medication? Why do you need to know my diagnosis? Who are you?

>Why do you need to know what dose? Why do you need to know what medication? Why do you need to know my diagnosis? Who are you?

How can people advise you without knowing anything about you?

You may not realise it but your response was distinctly paranoid, I would suggest that you keep taking your medication.

Ed.

I don't feel comfortable sharing my diagnosis with the whole world, especially with people who I don't know. You could be anyone. I have no clue. I didn't mean to sound rude. Although I agree my response was rather condescending. I'm sorry Ed.

You were clearly put off by what I said, but in my defense, I wasn't acting paranoid, I was being realistic.

Hello,

I'm sorry for 'snapping' at you, I was slightly hurt by your post as I was only trying to help.

>I was being realistic.

No one knows who you are, you are completely anonymous on babble. You don't know who I am; I don't know who you are!

>I'm sorry.

It's ok, me too.

Regards,
Ed.

I'm just weird about it. I have been on PB since last May, and not once have I told anyone what I've been diagnosed with. All I've talked about were my main symptoms. I think because I don't see myself that way and telling people is embarassing and degrading. Especially since I don't agree with my doc's diagnosis.

Hello,

>telling people is embarassing and degrading...

There are people diagnosed with practically everything here! Anxiety disorders, OCD, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, personality disorders etc.

>Especially since I don't agree with my doc's diagnosis.

Oh OK, I understand.

Regards,
Ed.

Don't be afraid. We couldn't possibly know who you are. If you tell us your symptoms, and what your pdoc thinks is wrong with you then others on this Board who may have symptoms and diagnoses like yours can discuss what has helped them with their symptoms. Everyone here has something that they needs meds for. No reason to feel afraid. We try to help each other. Everyone is very knowledable about dx and meds. Each has their own area of expertise. Fondly, Phillipa

Well, since you came here asking questions, I figured the only way I could answer them would be to have an idea what you were taking and what dose you were on.

Wow.

Dear Angela,

I think if you go off your medication there is a good chance that your symptoms may return. I experience paranoia for a few weeks at the same time every year, so I've learned to write myself notes on my calendar in advance to remind myself that my concerns are probably groundless. It helps me to have that reminder, even if I still feel the associated emotions.

Don't feel pressured to reveal anything that you are uncomfortable sharing here, even though it is anonymous. If you want to share more information about yourself, that's fine, but there is no requirement that you do so.

With warm regards,

Mark H.

Thank you Mark H., Phillippa, Ed, and Spriggy. I think the best thing for me right now is to leave this board. It makes sense to me that you guys would wanna understand more about my disorder to help me out. But I am just not comfortable disclosing that information. I'm Sorry. Have a good night:)
and thanks once again.

Don't worry no one on this site or any doctor will be able to answer that question with %100 certainty no matter how much information you provide about yourself and a diagnosis. However, I would talk to your doctor before you make a decision.

You might consider switching to a different antipsychotic medication. Whichever one you are taking now, you are obviously not real happy with it. If it were doing a good job and/or not giving you bothersome side effects, you would probably be more agreeable with it.

I think it is normal for all of us at some point in time to go through battles and difficulties in accepting that we need medications to function. Accepting it is an important step to getting and staying well.

If you are taking risperdal, maybe switch to zyprexa...or vica versa. If you are on one of the older antipsychotics, think about switching to one of the newer ones. Zyprexa is my favorite and my doctor's favorite as well.
