Okay, WHERE ARE YOU MATT MC?

Posted by Phillipa on March 3, 2005, at 20:36:13

Matt, if you don't answer us we're going to have to call in the big guns, and that means Dr. Bob. And if you are reading this Dr. Bob, is there anything we can do to find out if Matt is Okay? Thanks, Phillipa

As much as we all care about each other, there is only so much we do to help another person who is crisis. To write or leave a suicide note on a board is an awful thing to do. It is not fair to the other members.

I hope Matt is somewhere safe. Maybe he is in a hospital somewhere.

He will respond when and if he can.

I am not cold-hearted, but we are not responsible for Matt's actions.

Maxime

I agree with Maxime. As difficult as his life may be, and keeping in mind that all posters here understand just how debilitating (misleading) the isolation/desperation and distortion of depression is, we are still not responsible for his life and his decisions, and on some level it is shameful to throw a burden like this at us where we are helpless to change any decision he may decide to make.

Everyone here has shown him the utmost respect and care, and have tried to steer him to making the right decisions, to get out of a situation that his parents and various institutions don't seem to want to truly help him with. Albeit, he is only 18, a fragile age. But, now we can only hope for the best.

Being a new member here, i must say i am impressed with the level of concern and respect shown to the members of the board who are having great difficulties. But you can only do so much in cyber space.

Hi Craig,

I do agree with throwing a burden on posters but I am still very concerned and I also think his age plays a huge part in his decision to post this. He is so young and as he describes is very sheltered and desperate right now. I guess he felt it necessary to let the posters know he isn't going to be back. It breaks my heart what he is going through, I remember being his age (yuck) and I just hope he has made the right decision and not hurt himself in any way. But instead get some help. It isn't as easy to get help as it sometimes seems. I am not disagreeing with you just posting my feelings. I don't like how this is making me feel and I barely know Matt, I just started reading his posts. but I still try to remember that he is young and upset and times like that are not always thoroughly thought through.

Matt I hope you are ok.

Hey R - yeah, I agree, and as I recall, my 18th year was also absolute sh*t - parents confused, me in anxiety/OCD, and also an outsider politically/philosophically etc. I feel for him too. And he may not have known his motivations for the posting. but it's hard because we can't help...this is why i think maxime is frustrated. all of a sudden you *might* have a suicidal person on your hands and you can only hope that someone in his immediate life intervenes...and all we can do is hope he is well. this is again confirming to me that i want to be a counsellor someday. anyway. thanks for the follow up.

While I admit that it's frustrating to be limited in what we can do, I don't agree that a person leaving suicidal messages is doing anything wrong, or selfish, or bad. Whatever the reason, people usually have conscious or unconscious motivation that isn't primarily aimed at hurting others.

Some people have been helped by their cries here on Babble. Others haven't been. But people in a suicidal crisis are just doing the best they can, IMHO.

Even in those rare occasions where it's more a cry for attention than a cry for help, well isn't that a cry for help as well?

Matt sounded genuinely distressed. I hope Matt is well. And I hope he feels comfortable coming back to a community that won't judge him for his actions, but will be happy that he is here.

Actually, while I find it frustrating that we can't do more to help on Babble, other than inform Dr. Bob or try to get a person to reach out in real life, I also find it the very thing that allows me to be active here. If I felt like I could do something for suicidal posters, the responsibility would overwhelm me.

I don't know if anyone can answer this or not but does anyone know if Dr. Bob can do anything? I have emailed him.
I am so upset by this, I realize I shouldn't let it get to me but I want to know that someone tries to help him. I thought his Ip address could be traced or something?

There is something Dr. Bob can do. At least sometimes. I contacted him too. But no one should rely on Dr. Bob being around to do it, or anything like that.

In the end, unless someone has off board contact, it's really out of our hands except to tell Dr. Bob.

I agree with all of you. I just hope Matt is "lurking", reading our Posts, and sees that people truly do care. I would love to get into crisis intervention now. I've worked in psych, and this would be very fulfilling for me. I believe I have the communication skills to help someone in crisis. Matt, come on, answer us Please? Fondly, Phillipa

Why do you say you shouldn't let it get to you? It's natural to be concerned and want to help a fellow human being. I think "UK ED" used to "Babble" with him. Maybe he will contact Ed???

Again, I just hope he is safe.

Hello,

I've never babbled with Matt. I really hope he's ok though and posts soon. Maybe we're scaring him off with so much posting.

Or maybe he is enjoying it. That does sound awful to say. I really don't think that is the case with Matt ...

Matt, where ever you are we are thinking about you and hope you that you are safe in a hospital somewhere. Take care of yourself. You are a bright and caring young man with a life ahead of you.

Looking forward to your return.

Hugs,
Maxime
