remeron withdrawl etc.

Posted by Lushkins on January 26, 2005, at 13:55:37

I have been on remeron 30mg, for over a year now, for bipolar (I’m on a mood stabilizer as well). I have tried to wean of this over the last 3 weeks and went down to 22.5mg first of all, and felt better than ever. No irritability or unfounded anxiety, so after 2 weeks like this I decided to decrease to 15mg, and was hit with the worst insomnia ever. So fed up with this I decided to take a 30mg pill as insurance of a good night sleep (last night) which I didn't get. But that’s beside the point, as now I am hit with irritability and anger and despair. I got this all the time for the last 6 months but didn't associate with the remeron as I thought it was supposed to be sedating. Is it possible that the remeon was causing this anger which I thought was just my depression etc. I am going back down to 22.5 tonight I just hope I can sleep. I was just wondering If anyone else here has experienced anger when on Remeron and the insomnia that takes place when weaning of. I just haven’t felt as calm as I have on 22.5mg for a long time. I guess time will tell if it was to much remeron in my system or just the depression coming back.

Any thoughts?????

PS off now to punch some walls now bye.

lamictal 150mg, controls my rapid cycling in general although i think 200 would be better. Only been on for four months its ok i suppose. I just want to taper of the remeron as i think its causing me problems.

Remeron causes severe anger, irritability and rage in me. My husband noted it from the second week I was on this horrible drug. I wish I'd stopped it then, but at six weeks my pdoc decided it would be better to augment with WB!! That ended up being a long road to hell. I have tried to come off this drug three times unsuccessfully. Will be contacting a compounding pharmacy soon about lowering the dose slowly. When I tried to cut my 15mg in half I got really sick and didn't sleep. Cutting by a quarter, diminished but didn't get rid of problems.

Do you mind asking me what your diagnoses is? I'm just wondering if this anger stuff is related to bipolar or its its just a general side effect of the drug, so everyone is suseptable to it. I gonna try reducing my dose VERY gradually. I am a person with little patiance but "good things come to those who wait". I havn't really slept at all in the last four days, its not the depression coming back because I feel OK, its just withdrawl from the drug (i think). The last few days have been hard though as I have been studying for my exams (biology degree) and halucinating (lack of sleep) makes them just a wee bit harder. Oh well

Hi, I've been on Remeron for over 3 years. I've tried to get off of it several times, with no success. When I try to go off of it I get the worst insomnia and nothing seems to help it much. I've tried Ambien and I get a few hours of light sleep. After a week or so of this I give up and go back on the R. I was on a combo of Celexa and Remeron which worked great for me. Since I've gone off the Celexa, I notice that Remeron alone makes me really irritable and angry and to top it off, I don't always sleep great. I saw a post on here where someone had insomnia for 8 months while getting off Remeron. I can't do that and hold down a job, etc. Anybody out there have any thoughts or ideas about this dilemma? Thx.

I am going to be weaning down slowly one mg at a time. (Unfortunately, I was never in remission from the 15mg remeron, so I will eventually have to decide what to choose next on the med merry go round). When I hit the insomnia, I am toying with adding some seroquel for awhile. Won't know for sure until I get there. Good Luck. I feel for you, it sucks!

I've tried Seraquel for sleep and it was very activating...really wired me. But, now that I'm basically off all the ads, I'm wondering if it would have the same effect. I think the different meds interact with each other, so you don't always get the effect you're after.

As far as the Remeron goes, I'm weaning myself off of it by stopping it for as long as I can and then when the insomnia gets really bad, I'll take it for a couple of nights, and then stop it again. Just a different twist on tapering I guess. I'll take Ambien as my first line of defense for the insomnia though. We'll see what happens.

My withdrawal symptoms are not just insomnia. I get severly nauseaus and dizzy to the point of non functioning. So, I have to do a slow taper. :(

I've had a bit of that too, probably not as bad as you have it. You might try Dramamine or something like that. I've heard of people using Benadryl for withdrawal from Effexor - it might help with Remeron withdrawal too, who knows.

Right now, I think I'm going to continue to drop mg by mg but that pace is frustrating!

I'm new here, so I'm not sure how to post a question or reply. I was on Remeron (30 mg)for abt a yr. and a half and got off it slowly over a month or so. I haven't had any in abt 3 weeks and I too, have had to worse case of insomia that I have ever experienced! I am taking Ambien now with little help. I think I need to be on an anti-depressant, but the remeron makes me gain too much weight and is the main reason I stopped taking it. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get some z's without becoming addicted to sleeping pills? I'm getting desperate and almost tempted to go back on the remeron.

Hello,

Have you ever tried trazodone (Desyrel/Molipaxin)? It's an antidepressant but it's most commonly prescribed to help people sleep. It's not as likely to cause weight gain as Remeron.

The only other anti-depressant I have ever taken is Welbutrin (not sure if that's spelled right). Thanks for the reply. I'll look into it!

Remeron's notorious for causing weight gain. I haven't heard many people complain about weight gain with trazodone- you *can* still gain weight on trazodone though! .........I do get the impression that trazodone's quite a bit better than Remeron in the weight gain department.

Better to be addicted to Ambien than Remeron, I think. From what I've heard, Ambien isn't that difficult to get off of. Withdrawal only lasts a couple of days, instead of months. I'm in my third month of Remeron withdrawal and finally have my appetite back. The sleeping is taking longer to come back though. I definitely need the Ambien to get any sleep at all, and even that isn't great. I also went back on a lower dose of Celexa to alleviate some of the withdrawal symptoms and once in awhile I take a tiny bit of Remeron which seems to put me out for the night. However, I'm trying to cut back on even that since I really want to be completely off of it. What a crazy med merry-go-round!

I hope this helps. I know some people use trazadone to get to sleep, but for me it was very activating. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply...Here it is 6 am and I'm up again, after falling asleep around 1 am...Soooo frustrating to say the least. I have noticed that since taking the Ambien, that I seem to wake up and not be able to fall back to sleep, as before I used to at least sleep thru witout interuptions. One more question....Have you, or anyone u've heard abt. had neck and shoulder pain from Remeron withdrawl? Seems like that's getting increasingly worse for me also.

> OMG - I've been having neck & shoulder pain, but did not attribute it to Remeron! Well, now I know. I thought I was just getting old and creaky at age 45!

Ambien is good for about 6 hours of sleep for me, which I guess is better than nothing. But, I really want to try Lunesta. Its supposed to be better than Ambien and keep you asleep all night. It's also safe for long term use, supposedly. I was going to get a prescription for some, but just haven't had time to go back to the doctor. I'll let you know if I do try it though. Take care.

Karen

PS The neck and shoulder pain does subside gradually with time.

Well just thought I would say that I am now on 250mg lamictal and 22.5mg remeron. I am probabily still adjusting to the increase in the lamictal from 200mg (so far 6 days), been having mood swings, one minute joyful the next angry, also having trouble sleeping getting maybe 3 hours a night. I hope the lamictal will give some peace to my mind, which I think it may, lets hope so. It is my wish to get of the remeron, as it does I think cause anger in me, and is no real benifit to me in general, damm those darn antidepressants!!!
