My wife is currently taking Geodon (40mg per day) and Effexor (75mg per day. She is also on Vistaril (50mg 4x per day). She was on Geodon for about 3-4 weeks and came off about a week ago. Now she can't sleep at night and her heart seems to race frequently. We can't decide what she really needs to be on and what is causing the side effects. The pdocs are quick to prescribe, but we don't think they are doing the right thing.
This all started due to an extremely difficult pregnancy. Lack of nutrition and sleepless nights resulted in depression. She was in and out of the hopital for several months and finally after weeks of vomitting, she had a breakdown. She is about 5+ months pregnant and we are worried about all of the meds the docs keeping throwing her way. We would love for her to be off of everything, but are scared to make that step without the doctor. She isn't as sick as she had been with the pregnancy. She is staying hydrated and able to keep food down most of the time.
We just can't figure out what she needs to really be on and what is causing the insomnia and the adrenaline rushes....
Thoughts? Can anyone help?

I am so sorry to hear that, you both must be going through a lot. Doesnt help that you aren't getting guidance from doctors regarding meds.
In truth, I don't feel the best qualified on this board to tell you what to do--but questions you could elaborate on, so someone could help you brainstorm what might be logical to suggest to your doctor...First, what meds has she been on in the past--why were they stopped?
What were her symptoms when she was taking the combo you mention (why were they prescribed as far as youu know)?
And the current problem--did that start right after she went off Geodon? Could it be a withdrawal reaction from that? Is she now back on the Geodon?
Hang in there

Do you have an OBGYN Specialist in your area? A teaching Hospital? Someone with knowledge of what is safe in pregnancy. Fondly, Phillipa

I think it is the lack of an anti-psychotic. I have the same problem when I stop an anti-psychotic, unless I start a new one at the same time. You may need an AP, for your treatment. It is the only type med that I am truly dependant on. You could try a different one or go back on the geodon. Others would be: abilify, risperdal, zyprexa, seroquel. Emotionaly I get very wound up and emotional about life when I stop all AP's. Some times I can't eat, sleep, and stop anxiety attacks. Why did you stop the geodon. Thats the one I still take, I'm coming off of zyprexa, which was a very very good AP, except foro weight gain, and tended to make me more tired than geodon.
