Sleep Deprevation Therapy

Posted by alienatari on January 27, 2005, at 5:05:44

Hey all. I posted yesterday about how i couldnt sleep. I phoned my psychatrist and he wants me to not sleep for 24 hours and then see if my body will tire doing that and I can get some sleep. He was also talking about upping my zyprexa. Personaly, i do not find zyprexa at all sedating. So i dont think that will fix my insomnia. I have Bipolar I and Im on Parnate, Zyprexa and Epilim (Depakote). I dont think im manic. I really think im just having insomnia caused by the Parnate, it just seems odd that i didnt have it all along.

Anyway, he said Stilnox (Ambien) would probably not work if Xanax isnt making me sleep. I just took some more xanax, but twice as much as I did yesterday. I really dont want to spend another night awake doing nothing i cant stand it.

I hope he perscribes me something that will work better for my sleep. Actually I hope he perscribes me a low dose of Thorazine as sugested in my last post, or a related typical neuroleptic as I have a lot of nausea from Parnate (im taking Ativan to stop the nausea, it is doing the job but its hard for me to get my doc to perscribe it). Also, Parnate has not made my blood pressure lower, it sits mostly at 120/80.

So yea, im so confused and I dont know what to do. What if my doc wont perscribe me something to sleep? Will i stay awake forever lol???!
And btw, I really hate Zyprexa, I think the only thing its done for me is made me fat. It has done NOTHING for my paranoia. Seroquel was great for my paranoia but I had to stop it because it made my throat close up.

Take care and thanks for reading.

Remeron might be worth a try, it's the strongest antihistamine you can get & it is an antinauseant. Have you had your blood sugar checked recently? Zyprexa can bring on a kind of Diabetes which might be causing your weight gain, it is called Metabolic Syndrome X.

Thanks i will definatly check my blood sugar tommorrow. Ive tried remeron before and I gained so much weight. It was something like 5kg a week, i couldnt beleive it.

But is remeron compatible with an MAOI? wouldnt there be a risk of hyptertensive crisis?

I will see my GP tommorrow as apposed to my psychatrist in regard to my sleep probs. Its 2am here. Im bored. I took a tonne of Xanax and it did nothing. I dont think i can last a week like this. Hopefuly my GP (who i trust and have known for so many years) will be able to give me something (hopefuly thorazine, even if its just a temp thing) so i can get some sleep.

Thanks again and take care

Chris.

From what I've read Remeron is contraindicated with MAOi's. Trazodone on the other hand seems to be very popular in reducing MAOi induced insomnia. Although it's supposedly contraindicated as well, many people seem to safely combine the two. Do a search... I'm sure you'll find a lot of useful info regarding that combination.

It's not true that if Xanax doesn't put you to sleep that Ambien won't work. Benzos don't put me to sleep but Ambien does. Sounds lik eyour doc just doesn't want to prescribe Ambien.

Not sure about the Sleep Deprivation 'trial'...MAKES YOU GO MAD...trust me...I quit all my meds cold turkey (one moment of madness)and was FORCED to go without sleep because I had no way of going to sleep...and I mentally went insane...became terrified of the dark, shadows, my own cat, falling asleep (your body reacts so strangely to lack of sleep). And I hardly feel that Xyprexa has sedating qualities - and I agree that it adds on weight LOADS OF IT..and you have to have blood tests now and then just to make sure things are OK with this drug. Do stilnoct definitely not work for you? did you read an earlier post above about grapefuit juice enhancing benzo's (Valium and Xanax)...could you try this? Or even try a different form of tranquiliser of sleeping tab for a while. I know what you're going through - HUGE HUGS. Midnight here in Ireland..and Here I sit.

No i use to be on Stilnox (Ambien) before, and it doesnt work on me. Thats what he meant I think. I take it and it is as if ive taken a sugar pill.

The funny thing is, when i was hospitalised, I was put on it and at first it worked. Then about 6 months later when I tried it again it did nothing. Strange.

*hugs* too thanks. I went about 5 days without much sleep now. I still cant believe what my psychatrist wanted me to do. Anyway I saw my GP yesterday and she gave me a script for Thorazine/Largactil. I took 10mgs of it last night and slept 11 hours. I did wake up a few times but i feel SOOOOOO much better.

And i totally agree with the whole not sleeping makes you insane thing. When i was younger I remember when i didnt sleep for ages I would start to halucinate. This didnt happen to me this time though.

Take care

Chris :)
