Period of Withdrawal Symptoms - Zyprexa (Help!)

Posted by purplestarchild on January 25, 2005, at 10:08:38

It appears that every story is different, so I will appreciate any input from all. My husband was taking Zyprexa, (no other meds for bp)tapered off from 15mg, to 5mg over 1 year, no problems other than insominia, every now and then. Now he has been off all Zyprexa for 2 weeks. Disrupted sleep pattern, from going to sleep without a problem say at 10pm, waking up at 4am, and not returning to sleep but in fragments until time for work (6am). Now, 3rd week, Same scenario, except waking at 1am and returning to sleep in fragments. No other withdrawal symptoms, no mania, depression, anger, anything, so he's very proud of that. Would you think in about 6 weeks he might see a difference in his sleep pattern (improvement?) Would it be good for him to take something to help him sleep or would that make things worse? Your stories please!!

Thanks,
Purplestarchild

I would take a sleep med. I had a hard time getting down the dose of zyprexa untill I found something else to make me sleep.

Hi:
I was the Zyprexa 5 mg. for the past three and plus years and slept REALLY good every nights without any interruption. However, for some reason, my sleep-pattern became 'fragmental.' Only after the Trazodone 50 mg. made such a BIG difference to the point where I was able to sleep good, even without any 'dreams,' ... called, 'sound sleep.' I nomally sleep 8 - 10 hours for my 'mental well-being.' Because, I read somewhere over the Internet, SLEEP is very crucial for cell-regeneration in the brand(if my recollection is correct, ... but not quite sure for this tho').

In my suggestion, try to take a small dosage of the Trazodone(originally anti-depressant) before the bed.

Thanks HG and Sebastian. I found it strange that the Dr. would remove the Zyprexa cold turkey from 5mg and not give anything for the sleep issues. He tried 50 mg of Benadryl, but it didn't work. The Dr. said he will just have to ride it out. Not sure if he should take anything else for sleep over the counter or not. Dr. used this only for short term crisis and states since nothing else is reappearing, he will just have to suffer through this until it gets totally out of his system/brain. I'm concerned thou.

Hi:
I am NOT able to comprehend about his pdoc.'s intention, ... not offering any remedy for his insomnia. At least, some alternative med. or some form of suggestion on this.

However, in my 'pure' guessing, ... maybe his pdoc. wants to see your husband's progress WITHOUT any psycho.med. If he's able to function/live 'normally' without psycho. meds., then his pdoc. might rule out 'a complete remission.' However, in my personal view/opinion, it's quite scary NO med. at all in his system as knowing he was once on the 15 mg. Zyprexa that is 'mass' dosage. Recommended dosage for Bp II is said to be around 5 mg.

If I were you, ... probably I would get a second opinion from another psycho.doc., even a family doc. for 'just in case' basis.

I totally understand your concern over your husband's current 'BIG' problem, 'insomnia.'
H.G.

I would not be suprised if he needs anouther AP for the sleep, like geodon. I'm in the process of swithching for zyprexa to geodon. I tried to stop the zyprexa 2 years ago and had same problems only worse(took zyprexa since '98). Could not eat!?, sleep, extream anxiety and panic. I went back on zyprexa, at my request, and felt instantly better. Started eating with in the first 1/2 hour, slept like a baby. My doctor concluded I need that type of medicine, put me on abilify. That didn't work, I couldn't sleep, its a stimulant, like coffee. Now I'm trying geodon, which seems a sutable replacement. I can sleep, no anxiety, I can eat. I always look at side-effects when I pick a med now.
