speedy-trippy feeling

Posted by whoami on December 31, 2004, at 10:59:18

The doc says I have psychotic depression or schizo-affective. I take 120 mg Geodon daily. I had a psychotic break about 2 months ago, took Risperdal for two weeks and Geodon since then.

I started dosing once a day, at night, with the Geodon, but noticed a "speedy-trippy" feeling in the afternoon and evening, so I started to take a 40 mg mid-morning dose and the feeling went away. The past two days, I put off the morning dose and the feeling came back. About an hour and a half after I dose Geodon, it goes away, but if I don't take my Geodon, the trip lasts all day. I kid you not, my pupils dilate and I feel like I'm on an acid trip. The feeling is not entirely unpleasant, but it makes me wonder. Is this the effect of Geodon dropping low, or is the psychosis coming back? I feel like I might be playing with fire, and am troubled by the thought that I'm only a pill away from insanity. Even after two months of successful treatment, can I still be this far gone?

Sounds like both. The geodon drops low and the psychosis comes back. Geodon has a short half-life, 7 hours. That means you only have hafe the dose left in you after 7 hours. Which is why you take it 2xs a day. You take it with food too. I take mine with breakfast and dinner. If I take the dose late I start to notice a difference, yes sort of speedy. Geodon is a sedative, not a real strong one.

I only take 20mgs a day of Geodon. Amazingly, it works at that dose. My psychosis is under control, and I only take the one pill a day. I do notice if I don't get that next dose in me by 8 or 9 o'clock that I to maybe get a little peroid of wakefulness and like you described maybe a little weird feeling. I have read from a few others that withdrawal from antipsychotics can resemble taking small doses of psychedelic drugs. I am about to go off of Geodon and am not looking forward to this. I am also now facing possible hyperglycemia thanks to Geodon. But, thats another story.

I think Geodon's half-life is relatively short. I haven't taken it, but took lowdose Seroquel at night for sleep and experienced a similar "speedy-trippy" effect just a few hours before my bedtime dose the next night. I could look at abstract paintings and see all sorts of cool stuff in them, but I don't think they were hallucinogenic... more like being super-attentive.. I attribute it to a "rebound" effect of the AP wearing off and a minor dopamine flood of sorts.. kind of like a pleasant trippy withdrawal experience-and I wasn't taking the Seroquel for psychosis, just sleep... You just need to split your dose up and you will probably be fine.

TomG ~ can you please tell me more about the hyperglycemia and Geodon.
I take Geodon and I have been getting very shaky and I need to eat something to feel better, is this from the Geodon ?
What is happening to you ?

Note: I've been on the Geodon for nine months.

Actually redscarlet since I wrote that post I think I have figured out that it is *hyopglycemia* instead of hyperglycemia.

Geodon carries a bigger warning for hyperglycemia, but if you look in the insert hypoglycemia is listed as a rare side-effect.

The reason I thought it was hyper is that I have lost about 12lbs. since I began taking Geodon. Unexplained weight loss can be a symptom of hyperglycemia. I usually remain stable at about 175lbs., but now I weigh about 160 to 162lbs. I cannot explain this.

I seem to have a little anxiety for about the last five days right before a meal.
When I eat I get better for just a little bit, and then another rush of worsening anxiety comes over me. I have experimented by eating sugars, and the anxiety is much worse when I do. Thats the problem with a hypoglycemia attack. You need sugars to raise the blood sugar back into a normal range, but eating the sugar stimulates the pancreas to overproduce insulin.

Insulin drives the blood sugar down again, and the plummeting blood sugar causes panic and anxiety. So, in effect if you eat sugar containing food all day your body is on a sort of roller coaster. I am pretty sure I have this, because I've experimented and I can send myself through the roof with anxiety a little after I eat sugar containing products, and then I will get OK after an hour or two. I am not too happy with this, because Geodon works for some of my symptoms.

Also I became sleepy around the clock after about two months on Geodon. It is a weird kind of drowsiness. Like the kind where you're awake but not. I still have mental energy and I don't sleep all day, but I'm drowsy. I've been trying to figure out what it could be since I'm on such low dose of Geodon. Since then I've learned that drowsiness can be a symptom of hypoglycemia.

I am going to into my doctor next week to have fasting blood glucose tests to see for sure. Hope this helps and let me know how you're doing. I'll be anxious to know if Geodon has given you this as well.

TomG ~ Thanks for the replay... :-)
I decided to take myself off the Geodon.
It was giving me akathisia and I think it was also messing with my blood sugar in some way.
I think, like you it makes me tired, not sleepy though.
I eat a low carb diet so I stay away from real sugar (I do use Splenda) but I've been having sugar cravings and not being able to be satisfied when I eat, like I need more and more food and I still feel hungry !
I've never been this way before....EVER!!!
I'm not like you, I have not lost any weight on Geodon but with this new stuff happening I don't want to gain any weight!
I think the Geodon could have done something to my blood sugar/insulin level(s) ?
I hope this will all go away once this stuff gets out of my system....fingers crossed.
Please let me know how your glucose test turns out.
I sure hope this stuff has not given us something we can't get rid of !!!

I have also decided to try giving up Geodon and go back on good ol' Risperdal. I had high hopes for Geodon and it gave me good results for about 1.5 months. I have also been experiencing a lot of periods of what I think are akathisia after taking it. I feel like I am restless, but have a "mental straightjacket" on. It's gotten to the point where I can't stand it. I feel like mentally moving, but lack the capacity or something. Since you guys mentioned the hyperglycemia, I think that it too might be affecting me. I'm really having trouble finding an AP that doesn't have so many side effects. Hopefully I'll be able to tolerate the Risperdal.
