Calling all Anxiety Sufferers, Please!!

Posted by hockeygirlcanada on December 6, 2004, at 17:39:41

I am currently on celexa, and valium, which I don't like. My pdoc may try gabapentin with the celexa. I have had Generalized anxiety disorder for 6 years now, I have been on maoi's, snri's, ssri's, and alot of different benzos.
Anyone have any suggestions on what has worked for them?
Thank you in advance!

Have you tried tryclics such as Clomipramine or Nortryptaline?

I found that Clomipramine worked reasonably well for general anxiety once I got up to 150mgs.
Inicially the side effects were bad but they did lesson over time.

I take it alprazolem didnt work? ( Xanax)
I have used it successfully for 5 years now.
I take it ususally just once at night to sleep...but it works wonders if I am facing a particuliarly stressful event during the day.

I suffer with anxiety and gabapentin (Neurontin) did help some. It mostly helped me with ruminating thoughts, although my pdoc said that it helps most people with the physical symptoms of anxiety. Recently I added Desipramine (a TCA) to my combo and a number of people have commented that I seem calmer. I feel calmer too. Might be worth a try.

My pdoc said that in really bad cases people sometimes need to go w/ seroquel, but it hasn't gotten there for me yet, so I don't know.

Hope this helps.

I have not been on a tri-cyclic. That is the only group of drugs I haven't tried. I have constant ruminating thoughts. Not really depression, aside from the fact I have anxiety. This has been six years. The only thing that gives me temporary relief is clonazepam. But a high dose.
So tricyclics did work for you?

I am probably not the best authority on anxiety meds on this board, as I don't suffer from anxiety nearly as badly as some posters!

I sometimes have ruminating thoughts and they certainly are unpleasant.
I found Clomipramine very helpful for ruminations and sleep at higher doses.
Its supposed to be good for OCD and I 'think' there is a link between ruminations and OCD.

Its effectivness is not instant however, you'd have to wait a few weeks, I wouldn't pin your hopes on it as my situation is different from yours, but its worth a try, I think.

Hope I've helped a bit!

I, too, am a fan of clomipramine. The depression/anxiety relief I got from it was much more...natural and even. If that makes sense. I say this in comparison to SSRIs, from which I had relief but always felt high-strung. I know some have some side effects from clomipramine, but the only one I had was some weight gain (though not like the kind I had with Paxil). I was typically on 75 mg of clomipramine. If I were to add on an antidepressant to my newest regimen (trying mood stabilizers), I would choose a tricyclic over an SSRI definitely.

I found nortriptyline very effective during a very bad time after my mother died. Although I have bipolar disorder and can't tolerate SSRI's, nortrip (which is an old-school tricyclic) worked very well, the best of anything I've ever taken. I had to stop because it caused dry mouth which became really uncomfortable, however, I'm pretty sensitive in that way.

Low dose gabapentin also works well, but it creates tolerate pretty quickly. You have to keep the dose low, take off a week and then back on. It works well for me.

You won't want to hear this, but the best remedy all around is exercise and lots of it. There are times when you just can't manage it but once you get to a point with your medication where your motivation and energy are increased, just push yourself for a week. That's all it will take to help develop a daily habit. It's really a cure all. I should follow my own advice.

Doxepin worked really well for me many years ago when I developed panic disorder. It's another tricyclic - more sedating than nortriptyline. It has the same dry mouth side effect however. Nortriptyline can give some people tachycardia (increased heart rate) and was not a good medication for me. It's other side effects are less than doxepin's so I would have preferred to take it but couldn't.

I'm currently thinking of taking a small amount of a tricyclic because my anxiety problems have resurfaced.

Which MAOI were you on? Was it Nardil? That one is supposed to be particularly good for anxiety.
