Does benzo tolerance level off?

Posted by coplo on December 7, 2004, at 15:41:45

Hi I was wondering whether tolerance to benzo reaches a point where it "levels off"?
I have been taking Klonopin and it works really well, except my dose has gone from 1 mg per day to 4mg per day in one year in order to get same
anxiety relief.
. I hear some docs say that eventually it levels off around 6-8 mg per day and you get consistent anxiety relief at those levels for pretty much ever and other people doubt it. Anyone know of any research/persoanl experiences regarding benzo's and leveling off dose increases?

thanks
jc

I just take it as needed and don't take much at that, so I have no idea. I was just told to take it to manage panic until the antidepressant kicks in. Sorry, I know that's no help!

Dear Coplo,

You should stop increasing your benzo dose and add something like an atyptical antipsychotic in lower doses. Benzo use can be a problem if you build up doses consistently. But simply adding another medication that eliminates anxiety plus worries will help you stabilize on a particular benzo dosage or even help you to reduce it. There are plenty of options if you are in Europe like Amisulpride, sulpiride or if you are in USA try Abilify or seroquel. Even neurontin is found effective for some. In case of constant dose escalation, it is not advisable to continue benzomonotherapy. Take care.
PLS

If you stop does it regress?

Does anyone know what happens if you take it for 9 months and say you build a telerance to 4 mg per day and then taper off and not take it for 6 months. Would that not start you alot lower when you start taking it again?

Yes. Indeed it regresses and if the drug free period is as long as six months you can use the same thing as using it for the first time. Even the sedative effects of klonopin will come back in just short as three days of drug free period.
