desipramine/strattera link?

Posted by CraigD on December 3, 2004, at 13:59:58

I was about to try strattera for possible ADD (also a flakiness exaccerbated by lamictal) by I expect it to have a similar effect to desipramine, another strong NE med.

Over the three days I took desipramine, it had the paradoxical effect of making me terribly sad and unable to sleep soundly. Serzone (a terrible drug) also made me rather sad and it has a NE effect.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Hi,

Could you describe the psychological effects that the desipramine had on you in a bit more detail.

Regards,
Ed.

During the night, I felt half asleep. During the day, I just felt full of despair...well focused despair.

I can't really elaborate as it was a year ago that I took it.

Hello,

I'd be very cautious about trying Strattera. Other people on psycho-babble have reported feeling very depressed in response to NE reuptake inhibitors such as reboxetine and Strattera. It is possible that Strattera might be especially bad because it is metabolised to a substance which acts as a kappa opioid agonist and so might be expected to cause emotional distress.

It is impossible to be sure how a person will respond to any psychotropic drug so it's quite possible that you might like Strattera. Even so, please take care. If you do try Strattera start with a very low dose to 'test the water'. Perhaps your pdoc would be willing to prescribe a different drug instead of the Strattera.

Regards,
Ed.

Ed:

Thanks for the info. I am also on 20 mgs. of Celexa and 300 mgs of Lamictal. One of those might help to ameloriate the depressive aspects.

Cheers!

Perhaps you could try a stimulant such as Dexedrine or Ritalin. Unfortunately, stimulants aren't exactly free of hazard either though!

Hi,

I have some experience with all 3 drugs you mention. Serzone was AWFUL (but I was not aware of any NE uptake), Desipramine stopped my panic attacks but did nothing for my depression. I took it for years in my 20s. Tried again later and it made me feel terrible too.

Strattera, on the other hand, worked for me for depression. I stopped taking it bc it MAY have been causing some weird side effects (but I'm still not sure it was the med). Other than those possible side effects, it had few side effects all (i.e no overstimulation, no sleepiness, only a bit of the sexual side effects but not as bad as SSRIs)

For me, anything with seratonin makes me feel either no better, or much worse.

If you have atypical depression, Strattera may work for you. Of course, as always, everyone is different.

Good luck!
